Please, am so sorry for not replying so soon. We are always on the field gathering informations and talking to businesses.

@okeziestanley, if we wait till we started before registering those domain names then this project would have been defeated because the domains would have been registered by now.
Remember, an idea of a startup or project always occurred to many other people at about the same time. And you can not dawdle, i mean you can not waste time by testing and trying to get all the details right. You have to act fast!!

Erm I just want to say this, boya you’ll think about it, why not onedomain.com/cityname rather everycityname.com?

It just feels like bad thinking to have a domain name for every city in the name of “hyperlocal” besides…there just might be more interesting projects by government that could be tied to these cities. Now you have it promoting land sales et al.

Look at Groupon, and livingsocial, they are “hyperlocal” also, but they don’t go about acquiring domain name of every US town and city.

Have a super week.

I agree, registering these many domains makes absolutely no sense at all. Not good for SEO either. Not to mention you’re using a city named domain for a deal site! Haba!

What is the rationale behind this strategy ?

Thank you all.

@akindolu
Yes, you are completely correct for suggesting onedomain.com/cityname strategy. That is is the way it is always done besides logic permit it.

But to us using “onedomain.com/cityname or promoname.com” strategy will not differentiate us from the rest, infact it will make us too similar and make us to be “ME Too” services. Also we do not have the money to market our differentiation and that is why we “Narrow the focus”.
If we have big budget for marketing then we can proclaim our Value proposition in the mind of customers and in the marketplace, which will always have the same and slightly different Value proposition.
But always and still the big budget company will always win “The battle of the Mind” in onedomain.com/cityname or promoname.com strategy.

For Government projects, NIRA has made it easy because Government can register and use the dot ng (.ng) of the most of the cities domain names that we have the (.com.ng) of it, e.g
Ikeja.ng (Government reserved)
Ikorodu.ng (Government reserved)
Surulere.ng (Government reserved)
Apapa.ng (Government reserved)
And many more are all Government reserved.

Infact, Government can also partner with us because of their support for Small Businesses in their respective city.

@yinka
I must say, it is the BEST for SEO because of the same and unique services (Promos Services) we are offering in each city.
Infact Google we rank us first if you are looking for promos, coupons, deals and discount in your city.

In discount (deals, promos and coupons) services especially if you focus on Small Businesses, cityname domain like (ikeja.com.ng and others) is the best strategy because you will have “AUTHORITY” over the city you are offering this services.

This strategy is the best if you have many cityname domains and you are offering the same and unique services on them.

RATIONALE

(1)
To support and promote Small Businesses.
They will be better known and local customers can patronise them in their business locations instead of Global arena (onedomain.com).

Remember: Local customers are more likely to visit businesses in their city.

(2)
In a downward economy, customers will always look for cheap and quality products or services to try and to buy. Offering discounts (promos, deals, coupons) in your city will certainly boost sales.

(3)
On later date, Small Businesses will have opportunity to have their own “Online Promos Stores” but not “Online Stores” like GTB SME Hub, Konga or Jumia merchant store. But like a complete list of all the promos (coupons, deals, discounts) they are offering in their offline stores at a particular time or period, e.g

  • ruthlandestate.ikorodu.com.ng
  • mercy.ikeja.com.ng
  • cherish.ikoyi.com.ng
  • 360spar.lekki.com.ng
  • barclay.surulere.com.ng

(4)
Also, this is a Good local marketing strategy for BIG Brands like PEP, SLOT, SHOPRITE, DOMINO and many others. Because the Branch Managers (Location Managers) of these BIG Brands can boost sales in his or her branch location by offering Special Discounts for that location and using a unique “URL” for that purpose e.g

  • Pep.ikeja.com.ng
  • Slot.lekki.com.ng
  • Shoprite.ikeja.com.ng
  • Domino.victoriaisland.com.ng
  • Spar.ikoyi.com.ng

Remember, when these BIG Brand are offering promos, it is not all their locations the discounts they are offering is redeemable or applicable.

(5)
Marketing cityname domains is almost a Zero Budget because of word of mouth recommendation.
Local customers will always spread informations about a Platform (which is their city) offering good offers and deals in their location and this will certainly boost sales and create “Repeat customers” for businesses on the platform.

(6)
Our competitive advantage is what we refer to as “Intuitive Branding”. We do not need to do serious marketing to imprint our web address (cityname.com.ng) in the minds of customers interested in the city we cover. It is a Built-in traffic because most visitors of cityname.com.ng e.g (ikeja.com.ng) will type the name directly into their browser.

(7)
Small Businesses does not need to do randomised marketing or advertisement. For example, Restaurant in Ikeja does not need to advertise in general media platform e.g TV, Newspaper, Radio and the likes to people who live in Ikoyi, Lekki, Surulere, Alimosho and other areas, there is a possible chance that these people would not visit the Restaurant in Ikeja. The best way is to Target the Right location by using our cityname.com services to promote your local stores or online stores.

(8)
In the future, Munkly.com which is the onedomain.com strategy will compete in a dynamic way with the Big Budget companies.

(9)
As the Marketplace is getting Bigger and Bigger, many Small Businesses and Big Brands will FOCUS more on local marketing strategy and become Hyperlocal Sensitive.

So how do i react when I visit allenavenue.com.ng and realize its run by some porn syndicate? The problem with your approach is you have absolutely no control over customer perception, zero brand power, and ultimately no true product. Is that worth sacrificing for uhm, hyperdifferentiation?

Or obalende.com.ng
You’re spot on with your analysis. Hyper differentiation is just the right term.

And all this special thanks is just weird.

@xolubi
The Core Brand here is Munkly.com.
The Sibling Brands are the Citynames.com.ng.
In our approached, the Sibling Brands (Citynames.com.ng) are meant to complement the Core Brand (Munkly.com) in the long-term and not in the short-term.

Base on your analysis, it seem to us you have not visited any of our Citynames.com.ng

Please do these as a Customer or as a Business owner but not as a Technical Person.

  1. Visit www.ikorodu.com.ng then
  2. Visit www.ikoyi.com.ng and www.lekki.com.ng
    Then our strategy will be very clear to you. And you will see that;
    *We have control over customer perception
    *We have 60% brand power (Just at the present) and
    *Ultimately we have TRUE PRODUCT.

On “hyper differentiation”, yes, we are willing to sacrifice.
Truly, hyper differentiation is one of our key strategy.

But i will leave these for you to truly convince you further;
it is by Eric K. Clemons (a professor of operations and information management at Wharton)

Thanking people should not be “weird”, but a way to express more that you appreciate people that took their time to comment (whether good or unfavorable). Truly, they are one in a TRILLION.

Thank you @xolubi and @Yinka

You actually think yourself to be a major strategic thinker despite everyone pointing out the major flaw in everycityname.com.ng. You do, and that’s making you adamant really. And that’s OK.

Ordinarily, I really still think those domains should be out of private enterprise acquisitions. Like @xolubi pointed out, someone buying Allen Avenue for porn or even prostitution. Just bad representation of the city. But I don’t mind in your case in fact, because I strongly believe you won’t renew them in a couple years time.

Ikeja.com.ng for instance, should be an information portal if at all, in a sensible world. Not a deal site or whatever world domination idea any one may have for it.

I’m confident you can come up with another creative means to hyper-differentiate your startup, it’s not rocket surgery. Try. Make the effort.

And that you are making all these extensive clunky method, ordinarily should signal to you, perhaps you should be working on something else. I mean, if you have to do all these to differentiate, why bother in the first place?

Point is, you are trying too hard. Leave it there. Please don’t “special thank” me.

Exactly what I was thinking, but seriously … how come we don’t have government regulations for these domains?

1 Like

@akindolu, even though i do not think his strategy is great, but neither you, @Realone or anyone else can categorically say his approach is flawed. Yes, it may not make sense to us at this point but until he tries and we see the result we cannot know for sure.

I remember watching an interview of Ben Bruce about the birthing of Silverbird Cinemas a long time ago. Based on what I can remember, here is what he said

" When I was about to launch Silverbird cinemas, everyone told me that the idea won’t work in Nigeria. They argued that Nigerian do not have the ‘going to the movies’ culture. I even had a consulting company do a feasibility study for me, and they came out and said the idea wont work. Nigerians would rather buy the CD from a hawker in traffic instead of going to the movies. Nevertheless, I decided to try and go ahead. In the first month of opening, we made over N30 million naira in revenue".

My point is @Realone may just be unto something that we cannot see at this point.

If he really feels that he can pull this through, we should just watch is strategy.

Hundreds or Thousands people come here for inspiration and to also submit their products for review and comment.
But any product or idea that do not connect with you or agree with your logic or follows the way you believed it should be done, had to be nothing or rubish and “definitely you will be angry with that person or group”.

Now it is a fact;
If NOKIA corporation came to this forum, you would have said “do not use that name because it does not fit into that category and it is a name for a TOWN”.

Radar is unique and special and what people that submitted their idea and products are expecting from you in the end is what @easibor said. Even if you do not agree.

You had good things going on in this forum, please do not destroy it but embrace it, it will make you proud one day, i promise you.

@easibor
believed me your comment, is now personally our source of inspiration and i hope and pray that in the end many people we tell of our successful story, just like the SILVERBIRD CINEMAS story you told that inspired us

Thanks to all and goodbye and till we pull our strategy through.

Apologies, man if you think I rubbish your idea. Not my intent. Cisco is named after San Francisco. But you may have misunderstood me generally. I’m just being as real as real can be.

In any case, carry on. More power to you!!!

@Realone would it be possible for you to open up a bit about your challenges and progress and share it with us on a monthly basis? There is this other thread on Radar where the founder of his company seems to have made the commitment to give quarterly updates with insights into how his company is doing. Given the interest shown in this thread regarding your business model is this something you think you can do as well? It would definitely be a great learning experience for us all.

Who knows, maybe eventually you can partner with @easibor and a reality TV show will come out of it!

I wish you all the best as you explore this new venture of yours.
