You know the way the Kim K’s and co rant about thier so called daily lives and blablabla…
I am thinking about an idea to combine Reality TV and and a Real Tech startup.
So there are a couple of guys/ladies brainstorming about tech startup Idea, honing in on one… and actually proceed to launch it… including all the real things you will need to launch including talking to people, finding partners…users… marketing etc… I am talking about a REAL idea that actually GOES LIVE in the real world.
The difference between this idea and every other idea is that every component of this one will be recorded and aired as a reality show… Everything!!!
Think about the TV Show “Silicon Valley”, but a real tech startup in this case.
Pretty sure a real “real” startup would ask to get the money for recording/production as investment instead so at least, they get a better shot at success as against being a potential laughingstock on TV.
I actually like the idea, it somehow tells a story. Expressing some of the things the founder faced and the company. I thought of something similar to that couple of weeks ago but in a different context for StartupJobs.
Don’t limit it to tech only, there are other startups doing tremendously well outside tech. Your revenue will come from ads on the show … simple.
You are assuming that the success of the startup is the only good return on investment. The reality show in itself is a business. Think about the revenue from adverts, endorsement and syndication.
Besides, the entire show becomes a full training course for people interested in startups. Today, most people read about other people’s successes and challenges, they read about the do’s and the don’ts. The show will give people an opportunity to “watch” vs “read”.
You can even create an online community where every one discusses about the tech strategy and perform analysis about why one move failed vs the other which succeeded.
The reality tv show concept can be creatively done with Snapchat or Youtube. That’s where the people already are. Except you want to end up like Keek that no-one really uses anymore.
Rather than launch an app for this, start a creative media company that’ll curate such an experience from youtube and snapchat. Then build your brand from there.
… and depending on the length of the show, you can create 15mins pitch for starters looking for funds Shark Tank style
Why I see this as a good idea is also because large numbers of Nigerians are still offline, this is clearly another way to reach out to them. This will boost the startup community.
OP you assume you’re going to do a bang up job creatively. Mind, all productions are not born equal.
You also assume because it concerns a startup and it’s founding, you can make a viewing audience of Radar et al, long enough to become profitable to your content Uptakers.
Defining the initial assumptions and putting plans in place to either confirm, fine tune or disregard each one of them is part of the real discussion.
I do not think that there is anything hazy about it. Infact I see it as a necessary first step for every venture. Without it, one can easily get stuck in trying to fine tune details too early in the project phase. The problem of getting stuck is that you can lose sight of the big picture… very easily
In the spirit of “Fuck it, Let’s do it”, you could jump start this with a series of short webisodes, get them hosted on Youtube, make a ton-load of noise and grow a followership from there. You may never know…it might not stick but you could pivot to something from there. And if it does, good on you bro
