Once ads go in then the look and feel would look shabby. A better revenue model for now is content marketing for brands through our blog and shared on all assets.

Be prepared to wait a while. I do not say this in jest. 99.99% of African brands are clueless about content advertising.

To be honest, I have nothing against ads. And while you have a point that it might diminish UI, it’s still a valid business model.

However what has always been strange to me (which I was referring to), is when people launch new startups that no one has heard and insist on plastering the whole site with ads from day 1. I’ve always felt if my business model included ads, on launch, I would at least respect my users to serve them the right content before turning on the ads. A lot of people seem to get it backwards.

That’s one of the reasons I like your site.

They might never die, but for how long do you think they can remain the main business model for blogs, apps, etc? Advertisers will get smarter and start demanding more analytics.

I think for a very long time. But what we perceive as ‘ads’ and how they’re delivered will/has to change.

The truth is people hate ads. Take on the web for instance, ads are usually intrusive, bearers of malware, ugly, data intensive etc and folks have had enough (e.g Adblockers popularity).

But to understand what the future holds, you have to view what the biggest advert platforms on earth are doing: Facebook and Google are betting big on data

For instance, this week’s The Economist has Mark Zuckerberg on the cover with a good section on his imperial ambitions. Yes, they’re doing a bunch of things with AI, VR, etc but the aim is the same, they want to collect more data on you so as to serve you better ads. The more they know you, the easier it is to do that. [Of course there are privacy and security concerns, but that’s another topic].

Of course in this case, Summary News is no Facebook. But nothing stops @kheriheb to start thinking of data right now to understand her users. Definitely LIB, Bellanaija or Nairaland have enough bandwidth to do this.

Maybe a more relatable example for me is TC’s newsletter (which I just signed for), if later I get an email from them about a new product or service, I’m more than likely to find it relevant. These new variants like native advertising or more of personalisation etc, there will be various forms ads will thrive in the new world.

Advertisers already request and collect a lot of audience data/analytics that’s why vertical-focused and data-driven publishers (Buzzfeed, Vox, etc) are winning big. So i don’t really get your angle here.

As long as readers are unwilling to pay for consuming content through subscription, micropayments, etc. Ad products (in all its forms) will remain the daily bread of publishers.

PS: Ad-blocking/banner blindness would’ve been a good argument for you here.
