Women Techies?

Where are the women techies? I have seen quite a few on this board, are there any meetup groups in Nigeria for women techies and entrepreneurs?

There aren’t really official meetups or groups for women techies. Least I haven’t heard of any. Maybe coz we aren’t all that many. I wish there were though. Organized by women too.

We have the tech divas movement at Andela but it’s focused on women who are just looking to enter the industry. Andela women teach them the foundations of computer science on weekends…

None that I know of right now. We used to have one at CcHUB, called TechDivaz (side eye @iaboyeji) but there hasn’t been a meetup in ages.

Hmm, @ChikaUwazie this is clearly a gap asking to be filled? Are you a taker?

Hahaha! I swear no be me even come up with the name… Lol

Yea, Tolu is right! There was TechDivaz at CCHub eons ago :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: There was also an event organised too > WomenRise Wish we can have it back tho

What’s Women Rise about?

I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the Divas label. It smacks of patronizing women. As if women can’t simply just be techies.

It’s almost like those companies that make tool sets with hammers and drills then make the same tool set in pink with a pink drill for women.

But yeah anyway, agreeing with @ChikaUwazie on the main post. Women aren’t very visible in the Nigerian tech scene. It seems to always be the same people talking about stuff.

Even on here at Radar it’s mostly Onyeka, me, there’s one other person and one other person like that again.

Everyone else is male.

Also Nigeria’s tech space is so male dominated it’s crazy nobody’s talking much about how Nigeria’s tech scene might be an unwelcoming atmosphere for women.

I see where you are coming from the Andela women chose the name. I also think there are many approaches to closing the gender gap. Like almost everything I do, I like to take the long view. No quick fixes. Let us start today to reach out to young women during that JS3 long holiday because I have noticed that from SS1 it all goes downhill when it comes to women in science and tech because of salient cultural issues

Same here o

There’s all this pressure on women in senior secondary to take F&N instead of anything else they might be interested in doing. In a way there seems to be the reverse scenario with men and the arts

You got it right!
My Case - forced to take Nursing, badly wanted Computer Science, ended up doing Economics which I still don’t have a clue about.

I am in tech, solar energy and it’s a strange place dominated by men. Though some are impressed but they still doubt my competence during installations and repairs. I draw strength mostly from friends and family.

I’d be keen to attend a women techies meetup. I used to go to http://codebar.io/ in London which was a good model I think. It was a meetup // up-skill session with food and coaches to help.

We should all try to organize one.

Hey guys,

Just joined Radar today. Found out about it today too!

I think I’m a techie…lol… I studied Software Engineering but stopped thorough coding about sometime ago, do more of digital marketing and travelling these days. But I still do some coding when working on some web development projects…

So how do we start? let’s get us out there!

@lordbanks Thanks for this platform. This is a brilliant idea too. Atleast it will increase engagement and decrease in bounce rate *winks. I love it!
