Where are the growth marketers in Nigeria?

Today, we have more founders who are building their startups on blind guesses, wild assumptions and vanity metrics. (little wonder, our startups’ failure rate is HIGH)

The chances of growing scalable startups without a data-driven approach and growth teams is near Zero. So, it occurred to me that we need more people to fill this skill gap to help our startups become sustainable.

  • Is there are person worthy of mention that you know that is leading growth in his company?
  • Do you know of trainings focused on analytics and growth marketing in Nigeria?

Please weigh in your thoughts.

P.S: I am looking at some smart people like @freshboi_ekundayo with side-eye already

I agree that Data Analyst arent giving strong roles in Startups or no provision is made for them, the thing is based on how you gather data both quantitative and qualitative it tells you when youre dying or not, the best way to get feedback, Ask clients you disappoint.

For every delivery on our jobs, we call client to hear experience while following discussions online about our brand and mailing clients to understand where we erred, where we did well, our cost according to competition, our value to clients then strategize to get a balance.

But in a hands of a true Data Analyst they can give you tips like biggest referrals by company or individual who is your influencer you must develop a relationship to build on, recently i found out after stopping Ads fior 3 months our largest leads were direct searches of our company name via Google meaning brand recognition and products mostly searched for were wedding products, we quickly rebranded the wedding shop we have left a little dormant and have been making sales.

I think Google Nigeria should organize deep training on Analytics and some form of smart marketing for Startup BD and Sales teams.

As far anyone leading Growth, i would say there are lots. we need to meet often.

I second your thoughts and hope @aniediudo and other Google folks will take the challenge

We need them.
Once an MVP is released, it is necessary ti adapt using feedback from your customers.

Problem is, where can we find them?
How do we know who is good at it?

It’s easy to convince someone who knows nothing that you know. For example, I would not be able to judge a data analyst properly.

I think we may need a company like Andela for data analyst so we know where to go.

Thinking about it, we probably need an Andela for every major position required in a company.
Marketer, PR, sales, developers, data, e.t.c.
So easy to be fooled when you know nothing about a field.

I totally agree with you @StephenAfamO.

I remember that starta (@dotun.o and @yelebademosi) hosted a growth hacking masterclass sometimes ago.

That’s the kind of training we need at scale and should recruit a lot of people to.

Personally, I came from the background of get-rich-selling-ebook Internet marketing stuffs and have also related with some website designers. My takeaway is that neither of them is best suited as a growth marketer by default. There is need for training.

The opportunity here is huge

Let’s not wait for Google.
Those that know should find ways to teach those who do not.

Those who do not know. Be willing to learn.
Avoid the expert beginner mentality.

I agree with the points raised by Justin in the post.

Yes.
Even if I know absolutely nothing about digital marketing, I joined the list.

Hoping to learn!!!

Data analysta are not getting the role partly because founders dont know their impact in their businesses. Another explanation could be that we have less Data analysts because they don’t know what services to offer to startups.

It is both a budget and awareness issue

I hope to address this via a blog post I am working on.

I think its the first, Founders and CEOs dont know what to do with data analyst or where to structure them in their company ladder because we are used to traditional structures.

Thanks to TC’s daily digest today that linked to the story of a Google Intern, I discovered an online marketing forum run by Osaze Osoba.
It looks largely like Radar for marketing experts, you can check it out (don’t expect much as the site is still in its early day)…

Thanks for the mention @spokentwice. You are right about the site being in its early stage, but we hope to be able to cater to the Nigerian marketing community in no time

Nice one. But it’s only when they “ask and it shall be given to them”.

Although Google Nigeria has more or much role to play in this, at least to restructure search engine respiratory system to deliver local feedbacks based on the searches. With these, startups can be easily found on the first page of google other than bringing foreign brands to the showroom. Something like (locals first).

I will just try to connect the dots and see if it makes sense.

  1. I remember that @mark once tweeted that he is ready to host any tech focused event at hotelsNG’s office for free (am aware that #forLoop held there)

  2. Also happened that the article @gabe referred to was written by Justin, the guy mark famously recruited over twitter. I once met nice looking Justin at Yaba (left or right?)

  3. @Freshboi_Ekundayo, @ososoba, @Jimi and several others are badass at what they do (obviously all growth related)

It almost looks like we have an event that is just waiting for us to organize.

Like @Freshboi_Ekundayo, said, me too I am yearning for the event to hold.

Google has a couple of free certification that can turn you to become an analytics ninja.

To become an analytics ninja by training, there are couple of trainings (some free, some paid). If you are keen on training and certification, you can check @ososoba’s LinkedIn page for some inspiration.

If you want to teach yourself growth marketing, this post will also help you to get started on growth hacking MBA
