Radar So Far

Radar is terrible. Reasons:

  1. Extremely basic conversations are not moderated out
  2. Heavy use of AJAX in an Opera Mini continent
  3. Not integrated with Techcabal stories
  4. No clamping down on promotional spammers
  5. Claiming to be African when really just Nigerian

Just terrible? Nothing to save face with??

Y u no fair?

Besides, your list aren’t the worse case of diagnostics for forums; any forum.

PS: Really wish I could help the African ‘failed’ community, would be really fascinating to have thoroughly balanced afro-sourced opinions on discourses here - but its still early days, very early days.

I used to be irked by this before, then I realized up and coming (and easily the most excited) developers would feel unwelcome if the basic conversations are edited out. When the basic conversations are started by the moderators though (without a potential to impart knowledge whatsoever), I revert to being irked.

Every self-respecting developer will not have a problem with this. What’s your point?

Something I have suggested in the past as well. They did away with Disqus, but have failed to integrate Discourse. Read the prior sentence out loud.

I think this is being done already. Join the flag band.

Unfortunately, the creators are Nigerian and are well known in the ecosystem here so of course most of the members would be Nigerians. That doesn’t mean we don’t welcome others here. You could become a Radar evangelist in your country to help improve the diversity.

Very interesting choice of words @MistaMajani. But since you’ve actually gone ahead to list various ways Radar can be improved, I would say it’s all good.

In any case, 2 improvements points:

  1. More clarity on why posts are locked will be good. Some days it appears the threshold is at best arbitrary
  2. And how decisions to ban users are reached will be helpful. I mean Ozombo could be a nuisance but to ban him outright, could be termed an overreaction.

Its indeed early days, and definitely interesting to see how the community grows…

Lemme add another one: Suggested Topics is always the same silly threads. @lordbanks see your forum

But… they will always be suggested since you haven’t read them.

@PapaOlabode I believe Ozombo was banned for 30 days. His account will be active again in a little over 22 hours.

Oh cool! That’s actually good news…important not to forget that everyone is invited (pun of course intended)

Like you’ve been keeping up to his return time. Lol.

absence names the heart grow fonder …

Thanks a lot for the feedback @MistaMajani. I’ll try to respond:

You’re right. Not everyone is at the same level so some topics will seem “basic” to you and not to others. Ignore those that seem basic to you.

This is 2015.

A very legit complaint. We are now actively working on a solution that will be agreeable to everyone.

This goes on. But if you see them, flag them. It’s a community. You have power too.

We invite everyone from everywhere to participate. If more Kenyans participated, it’d look more African. But watch out for something soon

If you spend more time on Radar, you might find it’s not as terrible as you think it is. Have a great day boss!

Wow. I’ve never used Opera before. What devices are these people using Opera on?

Phones. Mostly Opera Mini 4 or 7

(coughs) Free browsing tweaks.
Excuse me.

The kind of people that use Radar most likely won’t be opera browser users. Radar is after the tech community, if I am not mistaken, and expectedly, they are tech savvy and use smartphones.

So my guess is, the majority of Radar users will be buried in the 4-10% of Chrome and Mozilla. If this were Nairaland, your data would count.

Couldn’t agree more.

They are sworn enemies

I don’t believe in this data. I just went straight into my Google analytics for today and begs to differ. So attached

So how was that data verified? I have just check another of my sites and the results is similar to this. I wonder where Opera comes into the show. Anyone else with some real data?

This is a Discourse issue as each page on Techcabal will have a new topic on Radar, which means that there will be a lot of random topics on Radar in which no one is interested in. This will make it harder for punters like me to see what is actually relevant on radar. There is a Discourse WordPress plugin which makes it easy for TechCabal to integrate it but I am sure they have already tried it and hated the outcome.

1 that sample size of TC Analytics is so small
2 of course if you design a site that’s unusable on Opera Mini, Opera Mini traffic will be low!
