Radar Ads: /O\

To Whom It May Concern

Did you guys ever wonder why Nairaland do not run her ads in-post? It makes for the worse kind of experience, Radar will definitely take a hit.

…and na Radar yab Linda pass for her banner ads’ obsession.

Instead of these annoying square banners inbetween posts, making the thread appear longer than is required, get a pub account with 50onRed or better still Infolink (not holding my breathe though) and run their in-text ads. Less obtrusive. You’d even get better RPC, and naturally more targeted ads. That’s if you must run ads.

Or better still, kill the ads for registered users and bombard unregistered folks with the promise to remove them upon registration. Atleast you’d get more users and not drive the active ones you have away.

I counted 5 ads (4 in-post and 1 Leaderboard) while viewing a thread. It is way too much. The Cabal’s should look into this.

I was about creating a similar thread but you beat me to it.

While I’m not totally against having ads in between posts, the interval between them should at least be extended.

radar has seen the light linda ikeji saw. Man must wack. Carry on. Its always easy to criticize until…

This is quite unfortunate. Radar has become barely usable on the iPhone Safari browser due to constant page reformatting as a result of the ads.

Got the thing bro. This critics though.

I suggest you move this thread to under ‘Meta’ tag

Not feeling this at all… Even on desktop the site is just displaying and moving anyhow because of the ads.

Oga Bankole and Seyi, which kain thing be dis na? una know no say media business hard before una start, come slap dis forum with ads anyhow?

Okay… I get, you need money, ABAN abi LAN needs their money back, but there should be a ‘sensible’ way to slap dis ads. I doubt if adsense is the best way to even monetize dis kain forum self… almost everybody on here are familiar with this. Abeg who will click? Maybe the noobs.

But seriously, user experience matters. I know you need money, but slapping the platform with ads anyhow no go on at all.

To the Cabals of TechCabal

You should check out Carbon Ads. It’s an unobtrusive way to serve ads, & it seems to be geared towards tech-oriented sites.
You could also check out other alternatives

You can also ignore this if you honestly can’t be bothered.

The user experience on Radar is definately suffering as a result of the Google Adsense slap.

While I know that Google Adsense is not the best paying ad platform (of course, it is the most guaranteed for Nigeria market AND any FOREX accruable from Adsense is tempting with the current exchange rate - almost N500 = $1)

But what options does Radar have? I am yet to fully wrap my head around a profitable model that is plug-and-play model like PPC ads, but @ukay’s recommendation is a good start for BigCabal.

In addition to our criticism of their Google Adsense slap, maybe, this is the time that Radar needs your informed opinion. How do you think Radar should monetize?

There is nothing wrong with Adsense ads for radar. However, wisdom should be applied. Above the topic and below the conversation will be just fine. It would still be seen. You can also do A/B testing with Adsense and jumia/konga affiliate marketing.

Monetising with Adsense is really sad. A lot of visitors will be mobile, these visitors will most likely use opera mini. Opera mini means adblocking. You can also go the direct advert route using image banners. This may make sense.

Dear Bankole,

Especially after this:

Moving forward

I had hoped to you would roll out a self-service advertising platform similar to but better than Nairaland Ads and use it to run both traditional and native ad formats.

Similar to the whole HTTPS thing, if you need help, you just have to ask for it.
