Let’s leave the ‘giants’ out of this…why do you want to solve this problem?

Of all the pain points, problems, issues to solve; why have you have and your friends decided that a ‘social network’ is what needs to be solved?

P.S I don’t mean this in a bad way…there will be always be ‘haters’ and ‘non-believers’ for even the best ideas.

I think creating a social network is a good idea, but it depends on what problem u are trying to solve n who u are trying 2 reach. If you are trying to build a social network for those who ARE NOT online or for those who DON’T KNOW how to use the internet (because of illiteracy) or for those who CAN’T afford the internet, then there is a huge market.

Starting a social network is not viable anywhere. Don’t waste your time going further if you’ve started already. Starting a social network of any kind today, is equivalent to saying you don’t know what you are doing or a newbie in the business.

With all due respect, how can you possibly know that?. Unless of course you have a magical crystal ball.

Not ALL social networks ARE BASED ONLINE or ARE DEVELOPED IN ENGLISH or USE MOBILE DATA. Your idea is great. It is very viable in Nigeria. 15 million people in Nigeria use Facebook monthly, 7 million people only use it daily. That leaves u with about 150 million - 15 million which is about 135 million monthly users and 150 million - 7 million which is about 143 million daily users that either ARE NOT online or CAN’T READ/WRITE in English or CAN’T afford Mobile Data.

The answer is NO

you should pivot…honestly

SECONDLY: I honestly think Nigerian techies should drop the idea of a social network, it kinda “sad” when I see lads sit down to see how they can solve a solution through tech and pick the facebook route ,Nigeria’s tech environment needs more answers to needs than just mere apps,( i am sorry)… a social Network won’t work, unless you are happy with 3000 loyal users who think your product is cool and feels good its not mainstream yet

@davidsmith8900, I really love your sarcasm. Let me clarify this; we are not actually venturing into social network as you think; we are only making use of the system to solve an evolving problem in Nigeria as well as everywhere in the word. we don’t want to network people as facebook, twitter or linkedin, we want to make social network more purposeful especially for the masses who do not enjoy benefits superstars enjoy on social network. I should have called it " Social network marketing ". I am ready to clarify further as the discussion continues…

how would you monetize social network marketting

as in differently from linkedin?

When most successful startups started, they faced several problems in this part of the world as their is no or little funding. We are creating a platform where a talented wannabe and unicorn can easily promote, develop and discover mentors, fans, employers, employers, tutors, etc and promote themselves or products in a way that is potentially 20times faster than facebook or twitter ads with no dime. This may seem impossible but we have done it innovatively. Please express your doubts or support. Thanks for your time.

Pursue your idea man, no one on radar can see the future. You can’t be obliged to pursue a problem someone else thinks is important or whatever.
I really get irked when i read comments like “another social network, bla bla bla, Africans dont need another app, etc.”

Reminds me of @TomiWalker post. Really awesome read.

Nice read, thanks for sharing it.

He’s completely misinterpreted your posts to arrive at ‘sarcasm’. You made loads of good points in support of his ‘idea’.

Don’t get me wrong I really like your expressions and judgment

we have our business model already, but we don’t have technical and financial strength to use it during launching. But we have business model which I wont be able to say now. @davidsmith8900, I misread your post. Thanks a lot. Need more criticism.

GupShup is a SMS based social network worth alot of money now. They are worth about $50 million.
Ghana’s Voto just raised $100,000 last year n they use voice to access the internet, connect and social network with each other.
FireChat uses wireless mesh networking for social network, no internet required n they have about 5 million Android users alone, not 2 even talk of Apple users. They are getting about 100,000 downloads a day.

Please what is your definition of a social network?

I was about to ask this, maybe we should start by defining what a social network is

it is complicated ( for reasons).Pls help me out. Oh ! I get it know . We set to connect people offline and online or any way together. Our vision is to make it easy for people to discover, develop and promote their interests both offline, online and any other possible ways. So we are already rolling out our offline connection of people – "social networking…@davidsmith8900,@Lamidi_b_a " while its website and app are yet to be finished.
