Barter cards doesn't work for me

So I signed up for barter and funded my dollar card (25 dollars) because I wanted to pay for AWS.
But AWS kept declining the card (AWS will attempt to charge $1). I reached out to the support guys and they told me everything was fine with my card. But the payment kept being declined, so I tried to use it for other services. I tried Uber, Taxify, Google Play, PayPal. They all declined, I can’t say what I am doing wrong because I did everything the support guy told me. So I took a look at the card transactions and found out all these transactions were actually logged but marked as pending. Here’s a screenshot.

I tried getting back to the support guy, but he won’t respond anymore. Now my 25 dollars is hanging (thank God I was wise enough to try small first), what do I do now. I thought of posting it here since the guys from barter seem to be active here.

Got fed up with barter,- the old style is always the best. - got a dollar mastercard from gtbank, bought usd and made the deposit over the counter. Problem solved. Works practically everywhere.

My Brother, you are not alone. Its over a week my team lead had a problem with their card, it does not work on any website, he has tried it on. Eg Uber, Playstore, AWS, JustHost, Digital Ocean

The Support guys don’t answer emails, when you call and complain, they won’t pick your call the next time you call.

Its really unfortunate that Flutterwave is yet to get its service offering right.

Its barely 3 months this product launch , and its riddled with service failure technically and Client relationship.

Barter card is not worth it

Sorry for that, I would have issued for you but it does not have cpanel and it works for all online transactions

Barter is in beta, guys. They said so themselves (which, in an unfortunate twist, is also why it’s free). My point? Don’t be too quick to assume it doesn’t work. Rather, try to provide them with feedback so they can fix it.
I know, I know, it’s easier to say this when your $25 isn’t what’s hanging…

I understand the frustration that comes with services that aren’t working, especially as it seems my experience with Nigerian businesses seem to point in that direction. My experience with barter has been markedly different. I did successfully pay for courses on Udemy and it was a breeze. And when I ran into a brick wall, because I had some difficulty setting up my card, I reached out to the support team who were very enthusiastic to help me resolve it.

That attitude made me go back and while I did have issues paying for facebook ads, I found a very helpful support team yet again. I did eventually have to find another way of paying but their support team is one reason why I will use them again.

In the tech space, things sometimes do not work as expected but a good support team can help save the day. I’d suggest you reach out to the support team by sending a DM on twitter. It appears, from my experience that would be a faster way of resolving issues.

What is their twitter handle?

@bartercards

Exactly what I am using, it works everywhere and the exchange rate is even cheaper. Though barter card still works on namecheap.

Generate a new card and see if that will work for you.

I had ~$30 hanging yesterday.

There’s a quick fix.

  1. Cancel your generated card. (The value of the card will reflect under your USD Wallet.
  2. Call support and ask them manually generate a card for you from their end and load it with the money in your USD Wallet.
  3. Call them every 30minutes to remind them you’re waiting for your card. It’ll arrive in about 4-5hours despite the fact that they’ll originally tell you it’ll take 2hours.
  4. You get your card via email. It’ll work like a breeze (I used in on Godaddy and Amazon). You however won’t be able to know your card balance unless you call them back or do some maths.

I hope that helps.

PS. I’m still waiting for them to call me back and tell me my card balance. It is well. :joy:

Hi I’m Kara and I am from Barter’s support team. I’m really sorry about the many negative experiences related on this thread. There really is no good excuse for it and we are working hard to stop them occurring.

However, I thought it would be helpful to provide some context. The honest truth is Barter has had way more traction than we expected in the relatively short time since we launched it in beta. In just three months, we have had over $500,000 USD spent across 4000 cards and used in so many ways we couldn’t have even imagined - from getting back your iTunes subscription to paying for school fees.

While this is great, unfortunately, it has also meant we’ve have had to scale acceptance of Barter cards faster than we though we would need to. We are currently working really hard to enable more merchants accept Barter cards and you will see the results of that effort really soon. Please bear with us.

Now if you would permit me, I’d like to shed a bit more light on some of the specific issues raised in the thread.

Card Declines: When we started Barter we had a very short list of sites we figured it would be used on - Apple Music, Netflix, Spotify, Deezer, AWS, Hostgator, Uber, Lyft e.t.c. What we did not anticipate were the implications of

  1. Merchants’ gateways flagging new card schemes
  2. Merchants’ gateways requiring certain verification processes (3DS for example)
  3. Users using our cards on money transfer sites (these routinely affect the card program as they flout our compliance framework and involve us having to contact our global partners to fix)

We are now in talks with the card networks to enable 3D secure verification on our cards, and we now block offending cards that have been used on money transfer sites instead of allowing them disrupt the entire card program.
In reality for our users, we have now created two levels of work around to ensure that cards are always available for our users and the card acceptance level on our program remains stellar.
In scenarios where the cards are declined, please terminate the card and recreate a new card. If the newly created card still doesn’t work, support will create a new one for you. If anyone is having any issue with cards getting declined, please send me a DM and I’ll personally ensure your issue is resolved immediately.

We wish the product didn’t have scaling issues but given the fast growth, while we realign, we will work even harder to ensure we can problem solve to catch the balls when they begin to slip. I’m available on here or on Twitter @bartercards to help with any issues you might have.

Hi @MrASulaiman I’m glad the workaround worked out for you.

Now about your card balance, please send me a DM with your details, I can help with that information

Hello @olaiwola thank you for the kind words. Feedback like this makes us more resolute in our commitment to good service. Please send me a DM if you have any more feedback for us.

Hello @lifted, I’m really sorry to hear you got fed up with Barter, I’m however happy to hear you found a way to solve your needs. If you don’t mind, I’ll like you to please send me a DM, I want to know what didn’t work for you so we can fix it to ensure we don’t lose good people like you again.

UPDATE : A support assistant finally reached out to me and apologised for the delay.
He/She asked me to delete the card and question, while he created another card for me from his end.
The new card actually worked seamlessly with AWS.

I’m glad that a support assistant finally decided to come and explain things through, funny enough, it was still the same assistant who helped me with guides until deciding not to reply my mails anymore, I decided to get me an Access Bank Visa Card.

Nonetheless, I think Barter is a great idea, and them being in beta, I’d suggest we don’t quickly write them off. I’m glad barter is back now, and I’m also glad, some individuals had their issues resolved. Guess I’d give barter another swing, and see how things pan out.
