I stumbled on this while reading an article on medium and I wonder could this actually true ?
It seems a little “stretched” to conclude our router is spying on us.
Of course, analysing the waveforms inducted by the presence of people is possible, BUT it is beyond the primary goal of the router, and I doubt its firmware is intended for that purpose. Plus, even if that was the case, alternative and open source firwares (openwrt, tomato, etc.) would have raised the concern long ago.
Sooo… lemme tweet in peace, bro !
As various part of the body are reflected in the wireless signal, the RF-Capture takes snapshots. Then, using an algorithm to identify body parts, it stitches the images together to create a silhouette of the moving figure. In some experiments, when the researchers focused the device on specific movement patterns they were able to trace a person’s handwriting as he wrote in the air, Gizmodo reports.
Emphasis mine. I’m pretty sure your router doesn’t come with these algorithms. The author of that Medium post just read about this research and decided to do a sensationalist article.
Reminds me of how some said that the CIA made Google.
@xolubi @Digital is there any possibility of adding other gadget or device to achieve this function ?
The link I posted talks about a specific device used by MIT researchers to achieve it, so I guess you have your answer.
