Biko I heard gist that they laid off 50 staff in the most unsavory manner. HR comes to you table, asks you to return your PC to IT and walk you out.
Shikenah…
Why is no one talking about this?
If this happened, you are now.
So it’s an hearsay. Do you by any chance please have facts to back it up with?
You heard. Funny how people take plain rumor as fact this days.
Pretty sad. N then someone or an entity’s image/reputation is damaged before the truth is actually known.
@davidsmith8900 do you work or know anyone that works at jumia?
Its insider info… Surely techcabal can investigate this
No I don’t work there or know anyone that works at Jumia. Do you work there or know anyone that works there?
Damaged reputation??? and you dont even work or know anyone there
Like let me be honest with you. I understand what Jumia is doing, If I was Rocket Internet, and in the same position, I would do something relevant. Not the same thing in the same way but something relevant. But at the end of the day, I will really love Konga to win. I feel like Africa needs success stories and I think that Konga (as well as IrokoTV and Hotels.ng) can get us there. Rocket Internet on the other hand, has alot of opportunities so if they fail with Jumia, they can still cover the cost with the success of another one of their companies or startups.
If you take a look at the companies or startups links that I just posted, you will notice that Rocket Internet or Samwer Brothers have so many opportunities so something like Jumia wouldn’t hurt them but I want Konga to beat them fair and square, not because they were hating. I believe the best way to win a game or to be the best in anything is to outperform or outsmart your competitors and just being plain better, not by spoling their reputation or saying bad things about them or damaging their image. A champion does the former, a hater does the latter.
I swear I don’t understand what you are saying at all. Am reporting a gist I heard and wondering why no one has said it and your saying stuff I don’t understand.
- Are you certain it didnt happen?
- No one said anything about Konga.
-
Rocket Internet on the other hand, has alot of opportunities so if they fail with Jumia, they can still cover the cost with the success of another one of their companies or startups.
I dont even get why anyone would think like this
That’s the main point. Hearsay. Hearsay can give someone a bad or good image/reputation in which works either against or for them in the present/future. For example, if you were an employer and I was looking for a job and somebody that doesn’t like me, tells you a gist or something bad about me (that might not be true), what are the chances that you will let me work for you? On the other hand if they tell you something good about me, what are the chances that you won’t allow me to work for you?
After hearing this about Jumia (even though it may not be true), what are the chances that someone/some entity might still want to do business with them, or buy something from them or work for them? But to answer your questions:
- Are you certain that it did happen? Do you have facts to back it up? Any articles, links, papers & etc. on this?
- Lets be honest we all know that the battle is between Jumia and Konga in Nigeria. So a bad image for Jumia indirectly works for Konga and vice versa.
- When a futbol coach/owner has 3 strikers and 1 of them is doing bad, doesn’t the coach/owner hope that the other 2 strikers make up for the one that is doing bad by scoring alot of goals?
@davidsmith8900 it was a gist and a question. It is the duty of TechCabal or any media house to follow the story and get the fact. This is a forum and not a news outlet. Jumia can as well release a statement to the face.
We seem to take things too seriously these days!
But I wasn’t taking anything seriously. All I was typing was that it’s not cool to spread a gist (especially a bad or negative one) about someone or some entity, because it might have a negative impact on that person or entity. I wasn’t angry or serious about it. I typed out of respect and love. Imagine someone coming to Radar and typing some negative hearsay about your company without actually knowing the truth. How would you feel? If @ogunlanaolumide had facts to back up the claim, it wouldn’t be a problem with me, because now @ogunlanaolumide has references. But there weren’t any facts/references to back up what was typed and already Jumia is now being looked at like a soulless greedy captilistic entity. No hard feelings or nothing personal.
That’s very true. We do need success stories
That’s what killed it. Erm, 3 companies to get us to success-land. I don’t think so. We have a plethora of problems that require solutions.
Quite a few other startups that are ‘trying’ hopefully we get to hear more success stories and not just getting limited to the same ‘success stories’ time and time again
Seems like there’s some truth to this rumor…where there’s smoke, there’s (often) fire

I understand your position, but Olumide was an ex Jumia employee, i think (and current Prepclass cofounder). So I’m guessing he should have credible insider info. Plus, knowing him personally, he isn’t given to gossip, and he has no reason to slander them.
Hopefully Techcabal will carry the story today.
I am of the opinion that this supposed ‘rumour’ might have some element of truth in it. Just three weeks ago, Jumia Tunisia was reported to be bankrupt. While it was denied vehemently. There seems to be many rumours flying around about the company and these coincidence seem indefensible. I am doing my own investigation. I will update the house.
@davidsmith8900 I think you should contact people you know in Jumia (if you do know anyone there).
Its not downsizing.
They fire staffs regularly and they have a right to do so, since the employees signed the contract that gave Jumia the right to do so. And before you say Konga is this and that - they do it also.
The numbers they fire now are smaller to the ones that were laid off in 2012/2013. Plus some employees were hired for some specific projects which has been fulfilled, so they have to go.
