This gent from Cape Town (@arthurattwell) has some words of caution about getting sucked into the startup scene. https://medium.com/@arthurattwell/why-i-won-t-run-another-startup-e5ff64c933d0
“Run a business, not a startup.”
Couldn’t agree more.
“The startup industry appeals to a very real need for emotional, intellectual and financial support. But (except in very rare cases) it is going to distract you more than it delivers.”
Also very true!
Simply a case of collateral damage for those startups that are ‘hollow walled’. It is an industry after all that ‘runs’ on startups. Pun infused!
However, reason there are co-founders, is so responsibilities are duely shared.
I, for instance, am a product person. Not a people’s person. I have partners consulting on that level for me.
Having a few skilled people interfacing the media and other so-called distractions, while you simply keep at hacking growth, is no mean science. Just common sense.
You are so right about playing to people’s strengths. As in most cases, I guess, it’s about serious focus that blocks distractions and heaven knows there are plenty of distractions. Hardest thing for some people to learn is how to say “no”.
