Wait, is this the right thread to post this? I dunno, may be mods can correct it if I am wrong
ehem… (clears throat) I just want to ask a simple question.
Why Do you Guys/Brands decidee to do the UNFOLLOW SPREE thing after sometime.
Now, @lordbanks did his own few days back,
Take a look at this
`
I'm about to unfollow everyone on my feed, start all over again. My, but really necessary. My DMs are open. pic.twitter.com/yBfh0y7sOI
although, It didn’t affect me, LordBanks isn’t following me before he did that spree.
this reminded me that Konga’s Twitter handle did same early last year in 2015, they used to follow me and I felt good to have a big brand in my country as one of my followers on Twitter, but they unfollowed me, i didn’t really like finding out they unfollowed, and i couldn’t find a reason why they did.
I just would like to know why this happens and what happens to the feelings of those who were probably following coz You follow them back etc… Thank U
For individuals, what you are interested in reading changes over time and you suddenly realise your Twitter feed is disgusting and needs a makeover.
Wait what? A brand following you does not mean they are paying attention to you. As a matter of fact, they use tools that let them know which tweets are relevant and should be paid attention to regardless of whether they follow the user or not.
In the end, just because I like reading what you tweet doesn’t necessarily mean you should like reading what I tweet. If you follow me because I followed you, find out you’re not interested in my frequently obscene jokes, and unfollow, I don’t see why I should be upset… or suddenly be less interested in what you tweet. It’s the beauty of Twitter. If I wanted “friends”, there’s Facebook for that.
Some people use the following/follower ratio as a metric to tell how well you choose the contents of your feed so reducing this ratio for some people might make them more attractive. Also, big brands may have followed you to get DMs from you which is no longer necessary when they open their DMs or you open yours.
People are on twitter for different reasons. When their feeds start to largely deviate from such reason, they try to clean up to get it on track. That means unfollowing people.
Sometimes, their reasons for being on twitter changes completely. In such cases, they do a total cleanup by unfollowing everyone and following a new set.
Some may decide they want a fresh perspective in their feed. Hence, this informs their unfollowing and following new users.
Generally, brands when starting out on twitter might follow back quite a lot of their followers. they look for goodwill by doing this. With time as they become very established on there, their feed gets noisy. A clean is undertaken when such happens.
Nothing personal in any of theses scenarios. It all just depends on the reasons for being there and how to make the most of it.
I could care less if you follow me or not. If I’m interested in your feed, I’ll follow you. And also, I do unfollow folks for variety of reasons :
You stop tweeting stuff that matter to me, or frankly become uninterested in your conversations.
You tie your ego to follower vs following counts. Jesus, it’s just a fucking number.
Also connected to 2, you try to communicate your “importance” by unfollowing spree, and those you find important, well…it’s okay because that’s exactly how I think. Proud as fuck, I communicate you aren’t that important to me as well. It’s just twitter and we are still cool.
I think very selfishly with my twitter feed. That’s all that matters to me. If I’m following CNN, I may not see the need for BBC. I just want to see my feed as a portal for important academic essays on EE, math and topics I’m interested in, news headlines, GSB and HBS posts, cool Mediums, funny tweets from Bob and God, some of my best friends.
If you stop being cool, I’m off you. There are those I follow on the basis of relationship and if they stop following, I just return the favor.
Kanye West follows only one person - Kim Kardashian. I then wonder how he found out people were dissing his wife… I digress.
Followed to Following ratio is an interesting metric. It can tell a lot about a person. From narcissism to seriousness to level of noisemaking. I Deleted all my followers once (including @lordbanks) and started adding them back again when I realized that the noise was useful. For someone in the media or consumer business, not listening to the music in the streets is not a wise move. Twitter trends can be manipulated but there are nuggets you will never see from trends. Twitter has this interesting thing called “Lists”, you can segregate the people you want to hear with lists. I personally use columns on TweetDeck to sift out people I want to listen to at certain times. I follow people who even talk shit because once in a while they respond to something else that makes sense or someone makes a comment that makes sense to their shit.
The greatest untapped potential of Twitter is in conversations. I think they are trying to build a feature around that. I want to see trending conversations and not trending topics.
