Why aren't Nigerian mobile games conquering the app store?

Maliyo raised funding from the guys at Singularity some time last year I believe and I think that was awesome because it means people believe there’s enough potential in this industry to put money down…
Prior to that , i also know my guys at ChopUp had raised some investment too :grinning:

And I think this is a great trend
Essentially, there’s the runway to focus, build quick…learn… build better…
We CANT compete with “Call of Duty” or “Clash of Clans” for now period… :grinning:

Money means you can get the best hands (including yours) and KEEP them dedicated . And when there isn’t that much money, you have to adapt your strategy which is why most Nigerian studios aim is to build small and localize, get better …build again…till you create your indie hit.

SuperCell for example…they got a $3 Million grant from the Finnish Government $140M Tekes Technology Fund in 2010. Now the taxes they pay to govt yearly in more that the entire Tekes grant.
And as great as it is that we are now raising funding, compare this to us celebrating $1 Million investments 6 years after.

$200k to a game dev studio with the right team and management and our doggedness in the country, I swear what we will build …go make sense die… ( right management though… very important…)

Video conferencing is fine too

Yeah $40 is pretty rough. I too would be interested in hard data if @segz is willing to share. Etisalat charges a subscription plan to consumers to play their games so revenue generated might be quite different than that tracked on sites like AppAnnie and Priori (I’m not sure they even track ad revenue).

Ya… @Bisong , I think MTN has a similar subscription service. Would be nice to get some feedback from those trying these platforms
I know ChopUp now relies on these services and have taken their games of the regular stores. Fingers crossed this yields in the long run.
I wonder though because i personally don’t know anybody in my network that gets games off these alternate platforms… It’s typically Google Play or The AppStore

Wait…
Edit to my initial statement…
1% of 47,000 downloads should be $470 rather than a tenth of that at just $40.
(estimating an average of $1 per in-app purchase)
This is really not good… Seems the DCC issue is bigger than I thought.
Guess we have to target the global market by fire by force

@Bisong, @Darmie So, while we are still on the meetup discussion, Maliyo hosts a local monthly meetup. They’ve been on a break for 3 months but now they are back. I think it’ll be a good idea if we have the discussion there. So how does 6pm Nigerian time resonate in Canada.

Am not a developer, but this post resonates a lot with the issue https://techpoint.ng/2015/03/30/gamsole-not-build-games-for-nigerians-only-abiola-olaniran/

6pm Nigerian time is 11am here. 7pm Nigerian time would be better for me if its a weekday (my lunch break ;)). Otherwise, anytime on the weekend is fine by me.

Where will he get the data from

User Experience is key

Apply for government grants

errrrr… which Government Grants???
In Myanmar? Abi Turkmenistan? :grinning:

Because this country we are in… Loooong thing

@Bisong Been trying to get through to the organisers but to no avail. Since I’m going for it and you say 7pm would be fine, then it might be something I can bring up during the meetup. It might or might not work out, so don’t bank on it. Anyways how long is your lunch break?

Would be attending the event as well

No worries. Actually we just had daylight savings so we’ve gone forward in time. Now we’re 6 hours behind you guys so 6pm works again!

Break is about an hour but I can probably stay longer if need be. I’ll PM you my contact details

Maliyo Games has a monthly meetup for local game developers. The idea is to learn and find solutions to festering problems in this market + get professionals/thought leaders (not necessarily in Nigeria) to facilitate learning sessions so we can make attempts to bridge the skills/distribution/monetization gap.
It holds every third Wednesday of the month and here’s a link to tomorrow’s event: http://bit.ly/2tcjlRv
