Hey guys…I’m thinking of developing an android app that would easily help Nigerian undergraduate calculate their Grade Point for the semester after the results are out, they would easily enter the courses and units ,instead of waiting for months before their school officially release the GPs,
I’ve been able to obtain the programme which contains the calculation method for Unilag and abt 19 other schools that uses this method.
So I need your advice on what and what to put into consideration before going ahead.
I am sure that you will not get much download and the app will make money for you. If you want to do it as a hobby project or for non-profit then go for it.
I do not know about other Universities in Nigeria, but at the University of Ibadan where i finished from, you only get to see all your scores in your transcript, which has your G.P in it.
@Rothmas. This is a lovely initiative. If you have the resources to go ahead with it as a Free Android App, then go ahead. I’m sure you will gain lots of download from the hundreds of thousands of Nigerian undergraduates. If you wish to make money from it, then you can integrate Ads into the App. The experience you will gain will position you to creating something better and more sustainable for you and the economy.
Looking backwards, I would have loved such an App if it existing 5 - 10 years. I hated calculating my CGPA manually.
Great Idea. I thought about this a few years ago, but I didn’t have the skill to get it done and all the people I met about it then were just sidewinders. As others have mentioned, it will be tough to monetize, but if you can pull it off, Kudos to you. Wishing you all the best!
As @onyeka mentioned… There are literally thousands of apps that do this already across platforms… A couple years back and I was also excited about the thought of it… I was pretty much a hobbyist so I developed it for Web, Windows phone and Windows 8 platforms… I never really promoted it though but like people have pointed out above, it’s quite hard to monetize… Regarding downloads, you won’t know till you get there… But the most important part if you want your app to stand out is to give something relevant and not just another app… I tried doing this then with something I called the GPA Fate analyzer, that checks and tells you if it’s still possible for you to Graduate in your desired Class… Let the imagination fly… And good luck in whatever it is you go with… Cheers
@Lamidi_b_a; Yes, there are Nigerian schools where grades for individual courses are released before the transcript (if they are released).
@Rothmas, I remember this same service was baked into our student portal back on campus (I imagine a few more schools have that in Nigeria), but to echo @Ndianabasi; nevermind how many products already solve the problem, lessons from working on this will come in handy in future projects.
Meanwhile @Rothmas if you are up to it, an app I’d like to see (that I haven’t seen around) is one that mirrors the backend of library management software for university libraries. The app will help students -
See what books are in the library
See what part of the library they can find them (What wing, floor, shelf number?)
See what books are available to be borrowed
Borrow a book from inside the app and pick it up later.
I prolly would have used our library and its books more if I had this app back on campus.
