What Is TechCabal's Business Model? 5 Years From Now Will TechCabal Be Around?

How does TechCabal make money to pay bills and stay alive? Is it just ads or something more? 5-10 years from now, will TechCabal still be here? What is the future looking like for TechCabal?

ads? I don’t think so.

I’m not the editor though, but there’s many ways online niche communities can raise funds particularly in developing economies like ours.

In 5 years time, it will be around. I’ve been following engadget, cnet, zdnet, verge, techradar and a host of other for years before people even understood the concept of smartphone.

Being able to understand the times and trends will always make a tech-site relevant especially one that is interested in adding value.

Therein lies the key to generating revenue. Go figure

Not to mention events, competitions, etc. TechCabal already hosts AfricaBeta, and once had a stint with Battlefield. That’s always opportunity for sponsors and what not.

Wait are we talking TechCabal or BigCabal ?

@davidsmith8900 seriously, how did you come about your questions? Are you in the same space/industry and want to leverage some learning points? Or is there some research you’re working on? Intellectual curiosity perhaps?

I’m curious because it appears that there a growing fixation with Tech Cabal as a whole. One day someone needs API. another day someone has domains, etc. So really interested to know how where the focus comes from.

First of all, Happy Tuesday to all and thanks for taking the time and patience to answer my questions.

@blacquay, do you know where one can find information on how online niche communities can raise funds in developing economies? Also do u think it is fair to compare techcabal to the sites that you mentioned? Like how much traffic does TechCabal get per day or per month? Or do u think that one day we will be where they are at?

@xolubi, so is it that TechCabal goes looking for these events and competitions or does these events and competitions come looking for TechCabal? Also what happens when a bigger fish comes to the pond and becomes more enticing? What will TechCabal host? Also where are these events and competitions finding the money to do these things, when the economy is bad?

@logbon72, I was more interested in TechCabal, but you can add BigCabal as well. I saw their main website and I couldn’t figure out how they will make money to live for a long time.

@PapaOlabode, I saw a pinned tweet about TechCabal looking for writers or is it interns (one or the other) and I read their articles from different writers. I just didn’t know if TechCabal was more of a non-profit organization so that I can help out by donating money, or an web-based internet tech startup so that I can help out by bringing more traffic.

Absolutely fascinating post. Can’t wait to hear the answer

Well David (Caveat: its long oooo)

We live in a Bank-led economy and the banks will jump at the latest notion of mind-bending idea that will spin funds. In developing economies like ours, parting with 1 kobo na big deal. But TC does not necessarily need to solicit for funds, I’m thinking about building an indispensable community that sponsors will have no choice but to approach; then the talking will begin.

TC might just be about sharing ideas and Technews. It might as well be a hobby of some and all. In time, people gravitate towards where the knowledge is and TC could monetize the kind of services available here. From startup promotions and appraisals, to paid or sponsored events organization, focus groups UATs etc ala @xolubi (I’ll let him expand on that though I have a few ideas).

Back to the my points, it’s reasonably fair to compare TC to those sites I mentioned even if they may have an unfair advantage of being closer to information on emerging technologies. TC is home-bred and I can say without a doubt it’s primed for the time we live in. I’ve been impressed at the quality of engagement and other things. Again, Nigeria with over 65 million internet savvy users will most likely will go to cnet and the gang for information. Growth depends on TC’s strategy and vision.

TC provides uncommon insight and information people seek. How to draw in more members to the community and increase the sphere of influence would be my concern but hey what do I know?

I’ve wondered too. I’m just awed by the crew, great work. I definitely want the cabal here a decade from now.

In five years, TechCabal would be one of the top ten and most highly valued tech startups in Nigeria. Particularly with the advent of Radar.

@blacquay, superthanks for the clarification and explanation. I really appreciate it. Happy Wednesday by the way. I wish u the best in all your endeavors by the way, to be honest. I think you know alot, and we both might be on the same page of how to bring in more members into the community. I’m looking forward to learning from u as this year ends and 2016 begins on different topics.

I think its obvious where Tech cabal is headed, the name alone is enough pointer. At the moment it actually sits among the topmost/widely read tech blogs in Nigeria, which invariably translates to Africa (not sure about the later).
Then radar.techcabal.com which have refused to accept the tag “Quora of Africa” understandably, is fast taking that position. So far, the “best” Nigerian tech discussions and personalities have an account here(whoever can gather and curate such information/persons) obviously will never worry about relevance…
The team members are smart, so can spin off very useful product when opportunity presents itself (… And how best can you do that if not as a coordinator of a pool of tech cabals? )
When you create/run a system, the spin off opportunities are limitless…
