"VoguePay’s award was credited largely to the significant strides it made toward providing a cheaper and convenient payment gateway for small businesses across the continent.
Despite being in operation for less than half a decade, VoguePay has gained significant prominence after it became the first payment platform in Nigeria to offer free account opening for its merchants as well as offering its integration suite for free.
It was also the first payment platform in Nigeria to facilitate bitcoin transactions as well as the first online payment platform to enable international gateway transactions for local merchants in Nigeria and across Africa…"
Was hoping for actual stats to back up this headline. Being the first to do something doesn’t make you the leading online platform, unless there’s some other criteria that I’m missing that wasn’t mentioned.
I might be in position to answer that as I was the guy wearing the tuxedo with the red bow
ANSWER: VoguePay was given the award after the organizer did their selections. I remember meeting Akin Naphtal the first time, after VoguePay was nominated for the award and I asked him the SAME QUESTION.
To put my answer in perspective, all of the facts cited are true. I knew about VoguePay in 2012 as a customer (that was after trying Eyowo) and have been close with the founder since. He granted an interview to TechPoint on his motivations for VoguePay
For clarity, the award won is BEST EMERGING ONLINE PAYMENT PLATFORM IN AFRICA.
@akindolu, I worry ooooo. How do you want the stat sir, come and take it (Don Jazzy tone
FACT CHECKS
VoguePay’s award was credited largely to the significant strides it made toward providing a cheaper and convenient payment gateway for small businesses across the continent. Despite being in operation for less than half a decade, VoguePay has gained significant prominence after it became the first payment platform in Nigeria to offer free account opening for its merchants
The company was launched in 2012. The only service around that time that was comparable was eyowo.com (its lowest tier was N6,000. I was a customer so I know)
2……as well as offering its integration suite for free.
3… It was also the first payment platform in Nigeria to facilitate bitcoin transactions
This was done as with a collaboration with IceCube3 - A South African company. If you know any payment guys doing bitcoin in Nigeria pre-February 2015, I will take a bow)
4. …as well as the first online payment platform to enable international gateway transactions for local merchants in Nigeria and across Africa.
This is what led to the evolution of VoguePay 2.0 in 2014 (Newsflash, similar platforms in Nigeria like SimplePay and PayStack launched 2016 with PayStack largely in beta as at November, 2015. Not sure if CashEnvoy does this yet)
5… Today, VoguePay boasts of tens of thousands merchants spread across 4 continents, as it remains committed to helping small businesses connect with the global audience.
I know of clients in US, UK, India (several emerging markets) and Europe including several folks from Nigeria.
4 years ago though… If you’re awarding them for features they launched ages ago and are now established in, that other payment platforms have since offered, that ‘emerging’ award’s kinda late, no? You were probably better off with the ‘leading’ title OP used. Just sayin’.
I don’t know of any, but by the looks of it, VoguePay hasn’t implemented it either. There isn’t a word about it on their site, and even in that article (from last year), it said it wasn’t implemented yet.
Regardless, good for them. Was just curious about the criteria used.
The problem with text is that tone and subtle auditory and visual cues are easily misconstrued.
I assume you are one of VoguePay’s management, and if so, you will be doing your company a huge disservice by leaving your post as is. I suggest you delete or “manage” it.
Boasting or dragging status publicly never brings friends. It’s like the difference between perceptions of Tuface and Jason Njoku.
Thanks a lot for your wise counsel ( thanks again)
None of the earlier comments was meant to drag into a features war with other payment provider in the space. It is a BLUE OCEAN.
It just happens that when someone is talking about how good his baby is, it might hurt the feeling of someone else.
@onyeka asked for facts which i was in position to provide and there was need to put some stuffs into perspective to drive home the point i was making.
Funny though, I have accounts with all the major payment providers (on a personal level
They know this already sir, even before their public launch.
VoguePAY was the recipient of the “African Online Payment Platform of Year” at the African Achievers Award held at the International Conference Centre Abuja, on Friday 8th of July, 2016.
To put this in perspective, Forbes called it the most coveted award in Africa. Past recipients include Desmond Tutu and other notable African leaders. 2016 awardees include VoguePay, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ChannelsTV’s John Momoh and other big names.
