Your “required competencies” are counter productive to you getting the experienced devs you seek.

How many people use SVN these days? Does your company use SVN?
If you do, why also use Git? Aren’t you aware that they do the same thing, and that Git is meant as an improvement to SVN?

If any developer lists these as his/her “proficiencies”, that would be the shortest interview ever & the only outcome will be the person walking in the direction of the nearest door. I have about 5 or so text editors on my PCs. Says absolutely nothing about my skill(s).

Judging a writer by the colour of pens he has used does not yield good results.

My views on text editors also apply to this.
What is the rational behind listing Android Studio when your requirements are obviously not geared towards mobile or Android development?

I don’t know if anyone can use all these DBMSs you mentioned and not have “SQL skills”.
MongoDB and SQL skills are a contradiction.

At this point I got tired of addressing stuff individually
Are you looking for someone who knows how to do something or who knows all the possible ways/tools to do something?
How about you focus on the skills needed to perform the tasks you need performed and not the tools used to perform the task.
Are you looking for a developer or a DevOps person?
I get that a pilot sometime has to drive cars, but if you need him/her to fly planes, you should place more emphasis on his/her piloting skills.

This ad would be counter-productive to what you’re looking to achieve, so you should consider rewriting it.
Get a good developer who knows what you need to craft requirements; no driver can craft good requirements for a piloting job.
I’ve said my (free) piece.

Seamfix is a joke when it comes to hiring, earlier in January when I was looking for job opportunities I was interviewed and spent 3 complete days doing one dev task after another, it was aimless, first Android then JavaEE then silence, it was by far my worst interviewing experience. I’d advise if you’re an upcoming engineer at the lower end of that experience scale and looking for an upgrade and a chance to work on something new then go for it, if you have any serious experience then miss this, it’s a bloody waste of time.

I love you all. I have said it times without number, tech recruitment in Nigeria is badly broken. I can’t say where they copy and paste their requirements from(I will find out soon). No one even talks about the important things like, work ethics, learning ability and dynamism.

Sorry about your experience. Mine was different. Although the assessment process was tough, the feedback was prompt (within 1 week). The opportunity gave me room to re-evaluate myself and improve on my skills.

Please hola at me if you know any opportunity for an experienced Database Analyst.

I agree with you. These requirement are ridiculous.

I asked a few friends on mine working at Seamfix about the work culture and I was informed that Seamfix gives you room to work on multiple projects and encourages you to think outside the box. I suggest you give it a try if you are looking for a stimulating environment to work in.

My brother please tell them ooo.
@Yinka1, are all these requirements compulsory?

Tech is really broken in the country, but its probably not just tech even our mindsets might be broken. I think what’s wrong with this post is a lack of what the role entails and probably a statement specifying that the listed tools are options under each heading. But maybe the publisher expected this to be obvious to experienced developers.
@ukay having experience in any of these tools is probably key to the role in question and don’t take things too personal - just because Git is more popular to the recent developers does not mean SVN is obsolete or bad: they both have their hiccups. Lots of people write great codes in Atom/Brackets etc, I think the list was meant to imply an IDE neutral environment and lastly a lot of enterprises still use SOAP.
So in summary, the post should have thrown more light on the job role and stated that these tools are like options.
@Yinka1 I’ll suggest you do an edit and respond to Seguleh1st

Wanted to apply… but as usual, my CV is missing :weary:

@kulgan

See this:

Riddle me this: how can an impersonal post take things too personal?

Never implied SVN is obsolete. You probably didn’t see this:

Should you list something you won’t/don’t use? How about CVS and Mercurial?

My response would be similar to what you wrote:

True, mostly common in legacy (and specialized) systems. Majority of the software houses nowadays have only heard of SOAP. They don’t know what it looks like nor have need for it.

How are text editor options relevant to Java development experience? If they were looking for the bad guys, shouldn’t they be asking for vi, vim, emacs, ed (apparently nano is not hardcore enough) etc?

If I wanted to go nitpick every perceived error, I would have ended up writing a dissertation - which wouldn’t help anybody (after all, who i epp? )

The main question to my post is: how do these requirements different between novice, intermediate & experienced Java developers?

I made my remarks out of concern for the damage this portends for the tech environment. Most experienced developers will stay away after reading that, & many eager in-experienced ones will bombard the firm in question for the job - which is not what the firm clearly wants.
So, the firm loses out on getting great talent, great talents lose out on getting a potentially good job, & the ecosystem is worse for it.

It behoves the catcher to put out the right bait to catch the catchee, you know. :sunglasses:

Where did you kept it?

@ukal My bad, I must have misinterpreted your “How many people still use SVN these days” question. Most people I know/witnessed make/implied derogatory remarks about SVN and probably a few other things like SOAP (sometimes even Java) usually don’t have any backings asides sentiments.
Lastly a company can use multiple version control system: Who knows what they do there, they might be contributing to some Apache open source code projects (definitely SVN) and doing inhouse (Git) or might be integrating with some third party who restricts code sharing to SVN or even Hg. As a job seeker just keep an open mind about tools and what you feel is in vogue.

@kulgan Many thanks for your insight and suggestions. This will be looked into.

Hello, @ZoeDtechlad they are not all compulsory, having an experience with these tools and platforms are an added advantage. Some of these tools are frequently used at Seamfix. If you are interested and think you have the right experience, please feel free to send your CV to obanye@seamfix.com; careers@seamfix.com

This post is an indication of something more fundamental. We need more technical recruiters in Nigeria. This one is even one of the good ones.
