So, in short, Master Plan, Part Deux is:
Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage
Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments
Develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning
Enable your car to make money for you when you aren’t using it
Elon Musk is truly exceptional, he is one of the few Entrepreneurs who’s product’s have a place in the future.
I wonder how close this ‘making money for you while you’re not using it’ point is.
Anyway, Musk has always been audacious with his goals
Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments
Including Trucks and Airplanes I hope.
Maybe, Uber kind of thing.
Yep. It’s a long game but Tesla has a huge advantage over Uber because autonomous cars is where the future lies. And ultimately, money.
Uber’s business model is only threatened as a minor footnote. It’s about owning the platform which in this case, are vehicles (cars, trucks etc). For instance, I don’t use Uber. Because it’s so much easier to get around by tube or trains. But I have a car that sits idle most of the week. If Mr. Musk can deliver a fully autonomous Tesla, I would buy one.
So in Elon’s future, if I go on a night out and I’ve had one too many drinks, the options I have is - get on a train or bring out my mobile phone to summon my Tesla. I think I would call my Tesla. Sleep while it drives me home.
[BTW, I wouldn’t use an Uber for same reasons I don’t use one now. It would take me longer to get home & way more expensive]
The key thing worth pointing out is that none of what I’ve written above is top secret or even controversial. Which is why Uber, Google and Apple are all working on autonomous cars. One can even say Uber has the weakest hand (cash rich competitors, brands etc), but all to be seen out it plays out.
The beautiful thing about inventing the future is that it doesn’t play out according to one person’s (or company’s) game plan.
The players and the variables are just too many.
So, we will most likely not live in Mr Musk’s future.
Nevertheless, here is a toast to all dreamers and doers.
I smell a Jayz line ![]()
Autonomous cars are nice-to-haves. But having autonomous cars, that could also make me money while I’m watching some tv show, that’d be incredible.
And does anyone notice the timing of this news? Perhaps it’s a move to kill the recent news of the Tesla car that killed its owner.
Contrary to what click hungry journalists would have you believe, the car in question didn’t have its autopilot engaged at the time of the crash, according to logs.
The thing is, Elon Musk has a wider coverage in terms of future means of transportation. Hyper loop will also break the grounds in regards to that. Trust me it’s really a good thing. Imagine you going to LA from Texas on the hyperloop and send your car ahead of you.
On a lighter note, I hope you know, my car would spend 15 - 24 hours on the road and I would spend maybe 5min in hyperloop.
Maybe a slightly disrupted version of FlightCar. http://farewell.flightcar.com/. Mercedes Benz bought off the Technology this month…
