In lunching or starting a Business in Nigeria, talking about Naming Convention which do we feel holds more value or relates more to the target market.
Would it be?
Local/Traditional Names like: Wakanow.com, kiakia.co, Booknownow.com, Gidigba.com or
Abstract/Purpose Driven Names like: Jobberman.com.ng, hotels.ng, paylater.ng, printivo.com.
… …
Use godaddy or namecheap and see the naming options you’re left with first.
Nothing holds more value other than the operating cost and bottom line. What’s the meaning of Ali Baba and how does it relate to the target audience? The problem you are trying to solve is far more important that the name of the business. If you are dwelling on this, then you are probably not excited about the problem yet…
Naming a startup depends mostly on the product or services being offered. The name actually is of no reasonable importance to very frank.
But here are tips that could help.
If you are looking up to start a company that is built on an individual, you can use a name (Hewlett Packard, Michael Dell, Ali Baba, Karim Rashid, McDonalds) etc. but build your reputation first.
Looking up to starting a company with a smooth syncro to the name, probably you’re the type that always want a smooth synchronization without much explanation about it, very intuitive, depending on what you are doing (e.g: Technology and Electrical -> Techlectric, Cregital -> Credible Digital, TechCabal -> Cabal of Technologists, Techpoint -> Here it is all about Tech etc).
Looking up to start a company with a meaningful name, probably you are the type that always want to explain the reason WHY you do what you do, every time. Think of names like (Arete, People, Human, Rebel etc)
Abstract names wins almost every time, you don’t have to think too much, just come up with it.
Like I said earlier; the product, not the production. And following the trend again, Abstract names gives more flexibility, you can easily switch between businesses or bring in new innovations because you will not be in prison of a name. Most of the startups and companies that came up recently are Abstracts, think of Jumia, Konga, Yudala, Kaymu, Jovago, Jiji (Dafuq, what the hell is JIJI?), Anakle etc. No real meaning, and they are selling; so tomorrow, they can bring up new businesses with the same name, without multiple businesses name registration, just like jumia -> Cars, House, Food etc. But imagine a company like ermm… WebSoft Technologies Nigeria Limited or AppPalour Studios or WebsiteCook Limited.
Thinking of a company name generally, don’t make a loooong one or hard to pronounce. Simple, short, swift and URL friendly, just like the abstracts.
Thinking of a name, don’t think, just do. And if your product makes sense, you’re done.
A common strategy worldwide is to use words in other languages that relate to your business.
That’s exactly what Paga did. paga/pagamos is Spanish for pay/to pay
