Some called it a David vs Goliath story: Guess who's back?

:sunglasses: :smirk:

Hello Radar Community!

How is it going? Samuel Odeloye here, co-founder and team lead of RoadPreppers. This is our ( yes…Our! myself and Nnamdi Nwanze’s) very first post in the community. And we’re really excited to be here to learn , to share ideas and gain useful insights.
Prior to this post, most of you might have heard or read about RoadPreppers, especially if you’re an avid reader of Techcabal. If you haven’t, I’ll quickly refreshen your memory on who we are.

So, Roadpreppers is a door to door trip planner app | travel companion that empowers users in emerging markets( Nigeria as our pilot case), plan their trips in easy simplified steps, and in facilitating the best decisions to be made on the trip.

Unlike most maps/travel & locals planning providers, RoadPreppers offers public transport navigation and estimated trip fare quotes in regions where public transit data are inaccessible, unstructured, chaotic or simply don’t exist and are most needed! ( I’d leave it at that for now)

Before I go any further, I would love to give a big shout out to everyone who has supported, encouraged and inspired us along the way and still does,Thank you!. @lordbanks Thanks again for the invite here. You’re absolutely right!. This is a more ideal platform, to get the useful user insight we seek.

As with any startup, we’ve certainly had our share of roller-coaster ups and downs. And would love to share more about it later. But the good thing is, we’ve kept our passion burning , eyes focused on the vision and now we have a better product.
Nothing gives us more delight than hearing what you guys think about it. Hey… if it does evoke some emotions in you, to share with your friends and loved ones. Please go ahead & don’t be a shy stranger!
We can’t wait to hear from you.

Hey guys, good job on the work…we need more products like this where’s it clear some sweat equity has gone into making it beautiful. Some observations:

Website

  1. Your video was Informative and concise. It was useful to understand what value to get from your product, so I decided to sign on.

  2. Minor UX issues with creating an account as multiple error messages for password, could have being rolled up as one. Eg 'password should contain numbers 0 to 9 and capital letters A to Z. Simple fix that could help with drop off in conversion at this point.

  3. Instant login which was good (no confirmation email nonsense) & it picked my location immediately, which was brillant from UX angle.

Application & Business Model

  1. So I used a search from ‘Deeper Life Bible Church Gbagada to UNILAG’. My search results were decent and the fare estimate (N130 - N150) appears reasonable (not sure). However why doesn’t it display the map of my journey? I’m also unable to save my journey as this would be useful for repeat journeys.

  2. Your video painted that this is a ‘community’ sourced map tool but couldn’t see anywhere to add feedback. Eg the start journey of my Deeper Life trip could have being improved with suggestions.

  3. So if I’m unable to save my journey (#1) and can’t give feedback (#2), where’s the use case for me to be a repeat user of your app?

  4. Because your app heavily utilises Google’s API to power your query, it invariably sends the message that a user can perform the same query via Google. [Note: I know this not quite true as the results are different - I checked].

  5. The fare estimate seems like your main differentiation point. This is good but I’m not sure it’s strong enough to make your app sticky for users. So if I know it costs N130 - N150 to get to UNILAG and I do know the trip, why would I check the app again? What will be useful will be real time traffic updates [No easy feat - but people will love it].

In all, I feel this is a brillant effort with great potential. It might make sense to capture one city/state and have a gradual rollout as the potential is enormous. Good luck guys

Love the UI! Care to add other cities to the mix? say…Abuja?

Oga me! thanks a lot for the encouraging words… Please if there are better ways to improve on the UI/ UX as we scale, please let us know.

:facepunch: your head is there! thank you… Please we’re always open to extra suggestions on improving the service.

Great product! I love the video. :grinning:

We hail oh!.. thanks for taking out time to voice out your opinions. We really appreciate it gan!. Also for the kind encouraging words, we couldn’t agree more… you’re absolutely right!! we sure do need more products like this. But the question is how many are willing to go the extra mile to deliver top notch valued added-services ( story for another day).

So our responses to some of your raised questions.

Website.

2.Noted… excellent suggestion. We would see to that.

Application & Business model.

Question 1.

Okay, so I tried this query while I was on the road, and also as soon as I got home to my PC . We were, a little taken by surprise when we read your comment of it not saving … We began to wonder if you were logged in? But I think I recollect you saying you were signed in. So I guess… its a pretty strange thing going on here eh? Anyhooo… Good thing is you mentioned this and we can fix this together abi?

If this happened to you whilst signed in and it didn’t save… chances are it might be happening to another user abi? and if that’s the scenario, that’s something definitely worth fixing right away.

But this was my own experience while checking things out… Please see the upcoming images.

1.Device: Mobile
Stage: This is me checking out the fare quote on my phone.

N:B As regards the Fare quote of the entire trip, just so that we are clear and on the same page.
Are you saying that its too good to be true( reasonable) for that amount? some faults with the pricing?
If thats the case I will talk more about the editor part and your role as a roadprepper when addressing your question on the whole point of using this service and as a roadprepper.

2.Device: Mobile
Stage: This is me accessing and confirming we still have a map display underneath in mobile viewing - ( all i did was minimise the nav panel… see that arrow  )

3.Device: Mobile
Stage: This is me viewing the entire map . Ideally when you tap on the cards ( in the direction query panel area), the panel should minimize and redirect you to the corresponding stage of the trip. At the moment, it only redirects you to the corresponding stage( map marker) but doesn’t automatically minimise the panel so you can see only the maps and map markers.
Which certainly can be a drag, if you have to keep going back and forth to track your stage in the trip. We are totally aware of this and a fix is coming up on this ( will give a sneak peek to what it will look like) so you can move through seamlessly.

Sneak peek 1

So you might wanna check again sir, to confirm you’ve your maps loaded. and its not play hide and seek  sir. Otherwise let us know if it persist.

Unable to save your trips

4.Device: Mobile
Stage: This is me saving the same exact trip . ( I saved it with a tag- why e no save? Papaolabode)

So I decided to modify and update the trip under a different category wasn’t sure if the trip was for school runs so i changed it to other later. ( Just to double check it doesn’t only save but can be modified)

Also just to be sure again I did the same query and saved it as a market trip- Papaola…( strange :expressionless: don’t ask me why…lool I probably should have used school as the category)

So we are really taken by surprise with your findings. Also tried this on my PC as well to be sure.

5.Device: PC
Stage: This is me viewing the entire trip and about to save it.

Device: PC
Stage: This is me viewing the saved trip.

Question 2 .
We can totally relate with how you feel sir, sorry about that…you kinda feel like you were tricked into this community mapping app and you didn’t see what you wanted abi…
Truth is, things don’t always appear as they seem on the surface.
So before I go any further, I would like to say some few pointers but not to be braggadocios. I really think what we have achieved thus far, is crazy enough to be celebrated… and at the same time we won’t do that and pride in what isn’t a 100% delivery.

For a 2 man team ( formerly 3…long story) I think we have tried to a great extent. But we can’t praise ourselves either because, we can still do better. And you’re certainly right that initial part of the trip could have been updated by you as a user who is more conversant with that area. And that’s the whole essence of you guys joining us we can’t cover Nigeria alone. ( will come back to this)

For anyone with deep understanding on software development and what it entails, they will understand that its not always as easy as it seems , neither is it always rocket science. The challenges we have faced with getting all of these data for the whole of Lagos was crazy!!.. not to mention fare quotes. Our Government has no structure for this… if it did, perhaps you would have been seeing well detailed public transit data on Google maps, here maps, Apple maps…etc and there will be certainly no need for roadpreppers.

That been said, there is already an ongoing development on this suggestion and flagging errors. Its is not just 100% ready for deployment . Excellence is part of our culture and we don’t compromise on that.

Here is a part, sneak peek of what it will look like.

SNEAK PEEK 2

So in essence you will be able to flag down errors and edit them as a user. for both the directions and Fare quotes directly from the cards.
As we all know, new bus stops emerge, landmarks, fare quotes all change over time . and can only be kept accurate by a massive collaboration between all of us.

In conclusion to this, we are open to extra suggestions
1.on how to edit ?
2. What you may expect while editing?
and
3. The process of confirmation of an edit?

Question 3 .

Think I have answered this already… you will be able to update and give feedbacks in some few weeks.

Question 4 .

Guess you have answered it yourself… when you compare and contrast you will see the differences.

For us to say we wanna go ahead and build our own maps, that will be an absolutely ludicrous mission!. By the time we are done doing that, I bet our solution will be obsolete by then.

Thing is, we could as well built RP with map box api ( on the basis of its aesthetic feel and other few things, Btw both services are almost similar) but is it beauty alone as a user you would be interested in, or as opposed to giving you a more solid robust database( places api, street names) you can trust.

Google maps did justice on that for us. mainly for Lagos and perhaps Abuja, PH. But what about other Nigerian states?. I guess it was the most logical thing for us to do. Given they had what we needed at the time. As we scale if we need to pivot away from that,we would do just that.

Question 5.

Okay, I would love to correct you sir on that… Say I wanna go to Shibiri from Pako Aguda (Via public transport) Please name one platform that can do that for you, speedily, with ease and at your convenience in Nigeria without asking on Twitter, or calling a friend…ANY?

Asides Directions and Fare quotes for Public transit , RP also provides you estimated travel time and the distance as well . You can also save and share your trips… ( this is something I like to do , I share to my buddies on whatsapp save myself calling credit )

In every business model development phase as Geoffrey Moore describes there are , The technology enthusiasts, Early adopters, Then a chasm for you to cross to meet with your early majority pragmatist , late majority conservative and Laggards( Skeptics) .

Our current Value proposition offering, is our MVP ( we would soon cross that chasm with product improvements and other expected product feats that you users really care about). But we sure don’t wanna do a waterfall development and force feats on you… and am glad you mentioned this, because it does validate some part of our hypothesis in our business model canvas.

Also if you go back to our Landing Page under the coming soon features you will see that we are also working on real time traffic update and route rescheduling.
By the way to answer your question on repeat visit… That particular trip to Unilag I bet won’t be the only reason why you will always come to RP or the only place you will always have to go. There loads of places you might not know of, and need help with directions and fare quotes. Or is there anyone out there that absolutely knows every street and corner of Lagos? or Nigeria… Please if you do abeg tell them say we wan hire them sharp sharp!!

Its been a pleasure responding to your questions and we hope you can someday make it to one of our demo. Will be good to hear more from you.

Thank you, God bless!

haaa!.. my guy you must be mind reader, or a magician!.. Are you a family member of Dynamo Magician? ( Okay that was a cold dry joke :expressionless: :smirk:)

Apparently we having a lot of ongoing discussion on this. After Lagos, majority of our fans come from Abuja so it seems logical to hit there next, right?

Btw are you a local in that state?

Hey @oreeh, good response from you and I hope to do cover all your points. Let me know If I’ve missed anything out.

To start, my statement below is incorrect:

So I take that back! I know you also provided a detailed answer to my ‘Question 1’ which was good, I also tested RP again, as I didn’t see the ‘Save’ option the 1st time - my fault. [Nothing wrong with UI, just me not being observant initially]. Might be worth thinking later of a pop up which encourages a user to save their journey, but this is absolutely fine for now.

Still on your Question 1 response, you said below

No faults with pricing - not what I meant. So I used to live in Gbagada and attended Unilag. Naturally the two areas came to my mind to choose for ‘from’ and ‘to’ locations. But I haven’t lived in Nigeria for the last 11 years, so have absolutely no clue if the prices were accurate - hence my caveat to say it sounded ‘reasonable’ (at least to my naive ears).

Moving on…

I saw the displayed map and this is where your product really shines! Impressive. That’s serious hook for a user right there…so the earlier you can make that happen, the better. Out of interest, is this part of your application battery or data intensive?

Now to your Question 2 response

I genuinely think you guys have done a great job (just like others have said), and I do appreciate the enormity of the tasks accomplished (don’t know how you’ve managed to do so with 2/3 people, but I guess some are genius). Having said that, I’m afraid to tell you (if you don’t know already), your ‘users’ don’t care about the effort you’ve put into making a product. They just want the product to do what it says on the can. So worth bearing that in mind for the future.

[P.S Just some context to my advice, I run a startup as well and have written about my experiences on TechCabal and TechPoint.ng]

For Question 3 and Question 4…your answers are spot on.

Now for your Question 5 response, I’m a little bit skeptical. Yes, you’re right to quote G.Moore and talk about MVP. That’s all well and good. However the fundamental fact is most people don’t return to applications once they’ve tried it once. So what will make me as a user return to RP? I’m sure there’s no silver bullet answer to that question. And you’re right that there’s no detailed mapping instructions in Nigeria. On the other hand, you’ve probably got an army of people willing to provide real time update (eg @Gidi_traffic style of update which I guess made you mention twitter). Of course I’m aware you can’t do everything all at once, but below are your reasons a user will come back;

  1. Directions and fares quotes for public transit
  2. Estimated travel time and distance
  3. Ability to share with friends

so my feeling* is a #4. which is real time updates will make it sticky and people will not use (and enjoy RP) but invariably forget about it.

In all, well done for an excellent job!

*my feeling count as 0. Take it to your ‘users’ and work on their feedback.

Should that / be &

How do you guys get fare prices and means of transportation?

@PapaOlabode Goodness gracious, you are one smart human being.

Hello!

So I was wondering - do you have a business model to generate revenues or is getting acquired your end goal ( hopstop/apple)?

Lol thx! I’m a learner o…

I was initially awed by the product but your questions popped the awe around it, good business advice. I hope they find a way around it and make the ultimate product.

Sorry for late response…busy long weekend.

Excellent! We’re glad you are able to save your trips.
The maps are the most data-intensive portion of the app. But it’s much, much less intensive than a site like say lindaikejisblog. We know people are data and battery conscious (we are too, lol) so we optimized everything from searching to showing maps to sharing trips all to make the user experience better and to save money on data.

Thank you for the praise but we are no geniuses just simple Nigerians that wanted to get around town without being cheated. You are spot on that our users “just want the product to do what it says on the can”. If we’re helping them negotiate better prices and getting them to their destinations along the way, we are more than happy. If there is anything else we can do please let us know.

You are spot on again: there’s no silver bullet to that question. Great #4 point. We are currently working on a live traffic update feature. Like any startup or company, to stay relevant we have to be innovative and give users what they want and need.
As such we are having an invite-only demo at iDEA Hub (directions from Unilag: http://roadpreppers.com/route/0/University-Of-Lagos-University-Road-Lagos-Mainland-Lagos/iDEA-Hub-Herbert-Macaulay-Road-Lagos-Mainland-Lagos,

:expressionless: Last I checked we weren’t running an NGO :relaxed: . Also if our sole goal of getting into entrepreneurship was to be acquired by Big shots Tech Coys.
I guess we defile what it really means to be an entrepreneur!!

As regards your question on having a business model.

Does a pilot fly a plane without a flight plan?

Yes we have one ( mind you subject to multiple iterations and pivoting along the way till we achieve product- Market fit)
