Should Facebook have opened an office in Nigeria before South Africa?

LOL, this is an actual argument? Who cares?

They probably sat down and thought “What country spends the most money on Digital advertising right now?” and followed the numbers

Let’s not even start talking about power. Ugh.

True. I once as a Nigerian, considered Ghana over Nigeria, just because of Power. It is depressing thinking about how much companies spend on power every week.

@binjoadeniran Oh really? Because I know how much it bites our little business’ budget here in Yaba.

Um, have you seen how much money telcos are burning keeping their services active here? Hell, how much the average Nigerian is burning? Let’s put ego aside, starting a business in Nigeria is a pain for this reason alone, not to mention other issues. Also, yes, they probably considered the country that’s more willing to pay for stuff online.

I have no qualms with this decision. We, as a country, need to get it together.

Well…To be fair, South Africa does have its own power problems - certainly not as a big as Nigeria.

THE people of South Africa are learning to live in the dark. Their beleaguered power utility, Eskom, is unable to meet electricity demand and in November reintroduced a tortuous schedule of rolling blackouts known as “load shedding”. South Africans now check electricity reports that read like weather forecasts: “There is a medium probability of load shedding today and tomorrow, with a higher probability on Thursday and Friday,” said a recent Eskom tweet. Newspapers print survival tips and “load shedder recipes” for food you can prepare without electricity.

I agree sha. Nigerian’s Power problem is a serious deterrent

Ghana’s power isn’t that impressive.

Okay you guys didn’t hear about the south African power issue.

Ghana power is worse than Nigeria right now.

Wow. And somehow, it’s as bad as Nigeria’s? And you know, when you’re opening your office in Africa and power is one of your concerns, you will somehow place Nigeria and South Africa on the same level? I see your logic, and I want some of what you’re smoking.

I mean… Nigeria’s in a league of it’s own power-issues wise. Also like I mentioned, it’s just one of our issues, idk.

I love how, 12 replies in, nobody can/has give a reason why they should have an office here.

@onyeka Well, let me go ahead and say it - Giant of Africa. /s

Sorry please did you mean ‘ego’ as in money or self esteem

Hi guys,

I’m looking up some data to backup their choice of SA over NG. In the process i also found out that Facebook Engineering team prefers Mecurial to git. https://code.facebook.com/posts/218678814984400/scaling-mercurial-at-facebook/
