@ozoesono , In as much as I understand your point you also have to understand what NIBSS has been doing before now. They house the central switch and to access the switch, you have to come in from a financial organisation and the money has to go to a financial organisation. Also , NIBS is not moving money they are only acting as a post office btw financial institutions routing instructions. The liabilities lies with the source and receiving organisation.
To perpetrate a fraud you must have done it at the source bank level not at NIBSS. One of the reasons they didnât opened to 3rd party developers before now.
BVN is a separate stand alone system used for fraud detection and its not connected to your bank database, its like having your phone no in public space. your phone no is one of your identities in the bank and its unique to you.
@dftaiwo , my experience with NIBSS has been positive, the only issue i have is their dependency on banks and their integration speed, they take their timeâŚits understandable cos integration with Nibss means access to all financial organisation eg, mobile money, banks, Micro finance
RE BVN, I shrug at this shortsightedness. BVN is not the focus at the hangout. Even if it is, surely getting more developers who are anti-BVN into the room would help NIBBS know their concerns and attempt to explain them, explain them away or fix them.
@ty4tizo do you have an agenda? All youâve posted on this forum (so far) has been in this thread.
I was alarmed (to say the least) when I read about the requirement to submit a BVN during the registration process for the event. This is not about being alarmist but this begs the question why? Are personal details like name, phone number and email address not sufficient? To what purpose does NIBSS require a BVN for a developerâs event?
If PayPal were to organise a developer event and they asked for your social security number, wouldnât that be very suspicious? I donât recommend that anyone just goes about posting their BVN anywhere where they ask for it. This is a number that can link whatever online identity you have with your real life identity. This is not about having nothing to hide but about protecting your privacy. Your BVN is very private information and should be handled very carefully. You really donât want to find out the hard way the implications of having information like this in the wrong hands.
Organisations shouldnât ask for more information than they absolutely require and Iâm afraid NIBSS is setting a precedent here for the abuse of the BVN number.
lol @ Having an Agenda . I only became active on this forum 3 days ago and I had to post cos this issue is personal to me. 2 reasons for this. 1: i think the propaganda around BVN is over blow and the real essence is understated 2: i feel NIBSS is doing a bad job with PR and the good work they are doing sud be publish especially amongst pple like us that need their service.
Been wanting to ask this question myself, but he seemed like he was being genuinely helpful, so I left it alone. Doesnât quite help that he doesnât have any real world identifiable info on his bio, so weâll never know if heâs an unbiased third party, or a NIBSS shill.
So, where then is the relevance of the request? Tying your registration to the event to your bank account numbers? Privacy isnât a thing anymore? You also forget the problem of precedence. If this isnât frowned upon, it will be taken as OK to request peopleâs BVNs for anything whatsoever. Leadership by example is important, like when banks say âwe will never ask for your PIN so donât give anyoneâ.
Next, a government related meetup will start asking for Local government Identification, health meetups will ask for blood samples.
Itâs really unnecessary, asking for BVN in the registration form. For an organization whose site offers very little useful developer support information, this is asking for too much.
Hi, try4tizo. I dnt knw if u knw abt this BVN api NIBSS is about to release. I want to know if one can possibly call a method of this api that returns d photograph of the account holder.
Whoa! Okay⌠I just imagined them not placing limits on this imaginary API and someone writing a script to harvest everyoneâs account details and photos for the fun of it. Maybe make it searchable too like the Ashley Madison database. Need to know how many accounts your spouse has and which ones heâs hiding from you? Just search for his name. My thumbs are already twiddling in anticipation of this glorious API.
I was at the forum on Thursday and from what I gathered, there are two ways to harvest data. 1) for validation which only gives you public information such as name, sex, maybe address etc 2) verification is the other type which requires you to have the person present, you need the biometrics of that person to access the data⌠This is my understanding⌠Photo maybe linked to verification and that API is not public, there are set of criteria you may have to meet. Best bet is to get in touch with NIBSS directly. They are very open and excited about future opportunities!
