Earlier this morning Juliet Anammah, CEO of Jumia Nigeria disclosed in a TV interview that out of its 30,000 registered merchants, about 6,000 of them are active on the platform.
Konga, its closest rival also disclosed the same figure for its registered merchants as at 2015. As in the case of Jumia, the gap between the active and inactive number is a staggering 24,000 merchants who are no longer doing anything with them.
Can we say they are weeding out delinquent merchants with bad products that are harming their image or merchants are not seeing the benefit of selling with the sites?
Either way, there are enormous challenges facing eCommerce folks, only periodic disclosures like this will educate many people who can only speculate due to lack of data.
