Iyin Aboyeji on Nigerian youth and Change

You exude so much wisdom, the name is so apt

One of the main problems faced by businesses (not just in IT) is lack of human resources. I used ‘lack’ deliberately because we have so many graduates yet we find it difficult to recruit, why? We may rant about the deplorable state of our education till the Atlantic ocean dries up, the problem won’t still evaporate (pun intended). It is particularly grating to think the likes Andela are not helping to alleviate the problem. They are not charity even if they were they still have their motive. They have a reason to exist even if it is solely based on altruism. Well we have people who give to charities saying ‘it makes me feel good’ - that is their reason which no one should fault in my opinion.

Do the trainees have the right skills to compete globally? I don’t think so
Is Andela helping with this? Yes
Are the trainees getting ripped off? I don’t think so

How can you give what you never had? They are getting trained and if they are not satisfied with the return on their investment (time, skills gained from the ‘training’), they can move on unless Andela hold trainees hostage (re non-compete agreement). It would be sad if they did.

Andela are leading the way and this is commendable. Accusing them of something untoward is rather disingenuous at best and at worst unfortunate.

An example of the poor state of things:
An employee refused to pick a call a while back. Reason “it is an unknown number”. Poor guy didn’t want to die from picking the call from an unknown number!

Back to the original post!

Everyone is got a story to tell, tell it as you deem it fit! Minds whether sane or not will still critique it anyway so what’s the point in staying silent? If you think you have done something meaningful or just about to, let the world know about it.

It is not easy to start, run and grow a business – just saying!

Seems some people are never satisfied with anything – I shake my head

Honestly, I agree with all your other points except above. If this is indeed is calling, he has to be messianic because that’s how he visualises his work. It’s actually leadership 101, to believe your life work is for the greater good.

The only thing he’s guaranteed to have every step of the way is doubt. Irrespective of outcome (success or failure) there will always be doubt.

There will be events, people, circumstances and situations which will cause him to doubt. But he can’t run away as that just kills the vision.

Yea. Think about Zuck claiming he is connecting the world when it was just merely students only network. That will be premature.

iPhone changed the world, IMO. Android. And several companies built because of it. At the launch of the phone though, it’d be premature to start stating that. If Steve had done that, it is because he is Steve.

My point.

Yep, all well and true.

But nothing stops anyone from being audacious from day 1. Tola’s main point (excluding the insults) is ‘Your story is not true’ and ‘your motives are not as altruistic as you claim’. My question is why does he need to change his ‘story’ because someone doesn’t like what he’s saying.

It’s easy to lionise those guys you mentioned as they’re in the tech space, but if you ever come across King of Clubs which is Peter Stringfellow’s autobiography, it’s worth a read. He made strip clubs respectable and according to him, ‘he did it for the benefit of society’. They’ve pushed to get him knighted as he has his legion of fans (and haters of course).

So why can’t a young man providing a chance to other youths tell his story? Why does he have to wait?

P.S IMO, he’s not even selling his story enough and I’m sure a time will come this all becomes irrelevant.

And the non computer science grads (and non grads)?? Where the interest came from? Have you seen the unemployment stat? Where else in this country do they pay you to learn to code? Effectively killing the (powerful) skill acquisition and employment birds with one stone. You probably schooled in jand, which is why you sound so distant from the reality on ground. Which is that schools here set us up to fail. Their goal is basic literacy and a certificate, no recourse to empowerment, enlightenment and encouraging creativity. Andela is doing an exceptional job at attempting to remedy that situation.

It’s not, attend Andela instead.

Konga, Irokotv, eTranzact, the increasing number of tech companies in Nigeria seeking badass programmers. They pay anywhere from 150k - 400k depending on how badass you are.

@Obi_Ik Are you a computer science grad

Yes, unfortunately

Lol so so unfortunate, i feel your pain bro.

hahaha… me too but i wouldn’t say it was an ‘unfortunate’ experience though

Yes, its true thinking before you speak considerations do not fall under any sort of action tip category, but they can be very important to your image, to your relationships, and to your peace of mind.

A brand face such as @iaboyeji should understand the importance of the ‘Pause Before Response’ tip for future encounters.
I myself can’t help but ponder what else he now asserts he now disagrees based on his earlier position of the whole ‘Andela Idea’.

Oh lord, pls save us from ourselves!!!

  1. First he posts on medium - he has a case to answer
  2. He defends himself - he has a case to answer
  3. He deletes his tweets - he has a case to answer
  4. Where does this really end?

You really need to ponder on this very well…

Stripped down to the basics, how much of what’s in this world is really altruistic? Much less in business…
Everyone just invents whatever narrative furthers their end. One cannot be crucified though for believing in his own narrative or how passionate one is about expounding same.
Andela isn’t about to save Nigeria but they are doing something.
Information that would be useful at this point would be if the Andela graduates are help to some unfair agreements or not.

Pretty much summed up whatever I was thinking in my head. This thread is actually confusing but people are entitled to their opinion.
I don’t think some people actually get the state of our educational system in this country or have tried to hire someone before. If there’s a group out there like Andela teaching other skills as well, please keep the fire burning.

Ditto my earlier comment. It’s bordering on the ridiculous. No wonder we popularised “pull him down syndrome”. Why can’t we just let the storytellers tell their own stories as they deem fit.

We don’t want to tell/write our own story then we moan if the “oyinbo” tell/write our story ‘presumably embellished’.

Well done! It is very frustrating to get over 500 CVs and still not able to recruit. Some CVs are so bad you just feel sorry for the applicant and the state of Nigerian education system. Imagine the wasted time and effort for everyone concerned

It is sad to experience this as a business owner and very much frustrating to see the likes of Andela getting criticised for anything (real business model, ‘undertone’ business model, Medium story)

This is exactly my thought!

Most of your responses are only good for traffic (as its causes lots of controversies). I find your manner of writing appalling. It is possible to make sense without attacking persons or brands.

@PapaOlabode you are now impersonating defense; makes for an easy target.

Criticism is as natural as praise, there’s nothing unbelievable about either sides taken.

And to be fair Iyin took the first personal swing;

The overzealous @tola would only identify Andela in his rancid criticism until after that mention. You can check for yourself.

It, however, seems to me this is the first time @iaboyeji is having a hearing on this perpective of businesses in his vertical.

While Iyin was making defense for Andela without admitting to the deplorable backlashes a few similarly modeled businesses have begotten, he was by default also defending them all.

And that’s dead weight in any defense.

Admit that the industry is ‘rift’ with certain ‘malpractice’, first, then follow through with your exception.

This however does not take away from the good work Andela is doing for herself, Atleast until @tola tells us what his Agbero business entails we would only see him as a disgruntled observer.

Sorry, I don’t get this statement?
