As long as its not used to curse someone
when I tried to type paypal on fiverr… the moment the letters reached pay I got a warning and i couldn’t even type anything after the word pay, even the submit button disabled immediately… I was fk javascript and fk regular expressions…
my point is there should be a word swap feature in discourse when you type profanities. the word should change to something or give the user a warning…
The community guidelines already covers this, albeit broadly. Language rights here are of the same standard as you can expect on any modern community. You are free to say whatever you want as long as it is not abusive or malicious. Now if you decided to title a post “Fuckity fuck”, and then proceeded to compose the body with nothing but 500 consecutive fucks, the post will obviously be flagged, and its author risks getting banned.
Off the top of my head, profanity WILL attract a flag if:
It constitutes an attack on any person(s) or group(s). Attacks are already prohibited in the first place, so that’s double insurance.
It is profanity for profanity’s sake.
If the user is clearly being a troll. And Radar’s moderator handbook (yes, it actually exists) covers the definition of “troll”.
Thanks for bringing this up, I have made a note of it under mod considerations that could use expounding on in the handbook. Because it is a potentially problematic issue. Especially in a world where someone can argue that a crass “fuck you” is an equal substitute for a more genteel “with all due respect, I think your opinion would earn contempt from a five year old”.
“Euphemisms of bad words are still bad words. Words are not created filthy. We give them meaning. So whenever you say “effing” or “fricking”… you’re missing the fucking point”
Context. So, I have no problem with it, as long as you aren’t just throwing swear words around like a gentleman at a gentleman’s club…
If you need to swear to make a point, then by all means, use the fucking f-word. But it becomes a problem where it comes off like you’re just looking for an excuse to use it. Plus, I’ve always wondered why people censor one letter in a swear word and think it makes everything okay.
Did you really think we were going to guess fecking?
P.S. I saw @akindolu’s reply while typing this. Pretty much covers it.
Ok. Motigbo
Out of interest, @wkyo, did you feel there was a lot of swearing going on? And did that make you feel uncomfortable? Or it was just a case where you felt some people were allowed to swear, while others were not (since you referred to ‘cabals’)?
Not trying to be tin foil here, but this thread appeared moments after I wrote my second post on the Spotify thread. It was also the second post of mine on that thread to contain the word “fuck”.
I’m a gaddem believer in profanity as a fuckingly great tool for communication. I’m especially fond of the F word, an underappreciated and underutilized weapon in the comms Arsenal.
So is this why you don’t comment often?!
Lol. I thought it was about me. Because I used the fuck word on the Spotify thread. Moments I jumped out, I saw a profanity post, and the mention of the ‘Cabal’ title. I just thought, well, maybe not, so I chose not to react. Haha.
This obsession with the Cabal badge is hilarious. PSA - badges are algorithmically awarded or taken away based on community activity. The people with the Cabal badge are not a privileged few who have the licence use gratuitous profanity. They are simply the most engaged members of the forum who have earned the badge with no intervention from admins. If @wkyo or anyone wants a cabal badge, all they needs to do is engage more.
Funny @wkyo actually does have Cabal status.
OHO. LOL, I didn’t notice that.
