But I’m looking less towards expose than holistic storytelling.
Imagine the current food crisis in the North-east, a news site that doesn’t just say ‘1200 people dead of hunger’
But asks why are they dead (corruption in food distribution? Refugee practices? Quality of food? Answers from diff perspectives), how did they die (not simple answers like starvation). Not just quotes…but actual fact. Considered fact devoid of partisanship or judgement or even useless sensationalism or outrage. Hard cold facts. Condensed into a 5-10 mins read and videa.
A research journalism startup is very much required and I believe viable in the Nigerian market. Nigerians and foreigners interested in Nigeria/Africa are forever looking for credible works upon which to base their decisions or advance their interests. Take a hint from yourbudgit.com, nairametrics.com. They are doing well in their own niches.
I know it’ll work. Especially if there’s serious depth in research, but it’ll cost you a lot of money and time before the books can get balanced. if you are boot strapping I will rather recommend you get paid by international platforms for research first, and use the funding to build on.
