My name is Aisha Bello and I am organizing DjangoGirls in Lagos on the 19th & 20th of February thanks to CCHub and our awesome sponsors. This is not necessarily an advertisement but DjangoGirls is breaking the internet haven featured in popular blogs like OloriSupergal , Stella Dimokokorkus , Pulse Nigeria , Stunt FM and a host of many others. I wouldn’t want to break Tech Cabal too so I will just pause on mentioning our features. I just thought after being featured almost everywhere it would be a disservice not to mention it on the one stop shop for all things tech news in Nigeria #techcabal
A bit of background just incase you havent heard of DjangoGirls. DjangoGirls is a global not-for-profit that teaches women how to code using Python and Django’s framework by teaching them how to build their first websites. The workshop is free and one of our main aim is to bring more women into the Techsphere and empowering them to Dream, Code, Create. Among other things we see a tech community in the not too distant future where women are equally represented and not marginalized in this seeming male dominated Tech industry.
Furthermore, a very young Nigerian Python community is brewing with goals of promoting the use of Python in Nigeria via various community projects, with plans of a PyCon Nigeria in the not too distant future. The first meetup of the Nigeria Python users group will happen alongside the Djangoirls Thank you Coach’s dinner on the 20th of February. If you’re a Pythonista or support Pythonistas, and excited about a python community in Nigeria subscribe to the mailing list . So tell a Pythonista to tell another Pythonista that the Unleashing of the community with Python awesomeness is about to unfold in Nigeria, and you don’t want to be left behind in this revolutionary event.
While some of these guys are my friends, none of them are tech blogs though…but welp, they have more mainstream traffic, right? Hopefully your target demo reads those publications. I noticed from a tweet by @onyeka yesterday, and David has scheduled a post about it to go up this morning. An email heads up, or Twitter mention/dm (they are open regardless of if you follow or not) to the “one stop shop for all things tech” like you said could have made that happen much sooner. Having said that, this is brilliant and a great way to start the year, well done. Keep us in the loop, and we’ll do all we can to help. Don’t forget to email the Techpoint people too, I’m sure they’ll bite.
forgive me am terrible with keeping up on social media. The driving force though was to reach out to a broad range of women who probably don’t know anything about tech or are TechSavy but are motivated to get into the field. I have actually mentioned DjangoGirls Lagos a number of times in the Python community thread as this was the first place I came in search of a community and answers, and I am pleased to say without this platform none of it would have been possible.
Thanks for the info I actually just followed @onyeka and saw her tweet . please you would have to forgive my ignorance which David are you referring to? would really like to say a big thank you and a massive shoutout on the mailing list and twitter for posting about the workshop.
I really appreciate your kind words, encouragement and support. I would definitely be bringing more news here on DjangoGirls and the Nigerian Python community, and ah would do a mail too to Techpoint. Hopefully they would be kind to me
Great work. I learned about the org while in the UK and I thought about doing something similar here but you clearly more connects/resources so even better! I’ll still try to do my bit though. Signed up to be a mentor.
when I attended one of their workshops, right then and there I knew I had to bring it back home and share this amazing opportunity and knowledge with women in Nigeria. It still great that you thought about it, you know what they say about great minds… Look forward to working together soon. Awesome!!! thanks a lot for signing up and offering your really valuable time to coach really amazing ladies who are ready to learn. I would soon be in touch
