Grid view or List view?

I’ve been dragging with my team about which default view style to adapt in our mobile app; I love grid style because the photos are more obvious, entire layout looks cooler and u see more items within a selected space. But it is not going down well with my developer, he thinks List view is the ‘in thing’ and its much lovelier to look at… I’m confused…
I’m interested in choosing which ever one that is more effective in retaining viewership.

What do you all think and which view style do u actually prefer?

BTW… This is about a (tech)news app

For News, List view works. Lists hold a lot more information that can draw users in to engaging with the content. In this context, Grids would fail and endanger your UX.

Exactly why this post was created… How will you respond to a grid or list view in a mobile app that serves you with tech news? What better environment to ask that question?

Do A/B Testing with a core group of 100 users each, use both styles text and get feedback best way to go.

I agree with you, let the test data be basis of your decision although there is a place of intuition and gut.

A/B testing, 100 users? For a news site? Really?!

Unless you have some mad budget, I’ll strongly advice against that. I’m pretty sure there are tons of tests regarding that problem that has been done. Just look at the readily available data.

Personally, I don’t like grid views for news sites on mobile.
Grid views on mobile are good for instances where the image is almost as important as the content. Like product showcases, picture sharing, video content etc.
But for a news site, you’re better off with with a list view where the headline takes more priority.
With that being said, I like the current view on your site, but maybe instead of 5 lists per each full vh, you can make it 4, and reduce the dominance of the categories buttons, like throw it in a ghost button with a less dominant hue border.

Well said! Everything will be considered. Thanks for your input.

I think for a start, you could just provide an icon for users to toggle the view and track the choices. If a particular view is preferred, you can then make it default. You could also make it part of the on boarding process of the app where first time users can select how they would like the news displayed and store it under user preferences or settings.
