Well, this is definitely a big deal for new top-level domains. For Google, which is the largest search engine in the world, to believe in the new gTLD enough to switch to one is a big signal that Daniel Negari definitely knows his onion.
abc.xyz is the web address for Google’s new parent entity, Alphabet Inc. A new umbrella under which Google hopes to restructure its giant’s core business.
All things considered, the purchase of abc.xyz can be attributed to their general happy-go-lucky nature, rather than some ingenuity (besides the fact that he purchased the TLD for starters) on Daniel’s part. I mean, it’s alphabets. besides a rather verbose and possibly annoying abcdef…pqrstw.xyz, what better domain name literally represents the word?
When you generate revenues well in excess of $50 billion in a year, you can do almost anything you want. For the rest of us, we have to play by the reality on ground. A .com is the default top-level domain that comes to mind for most people. Alphabet Inc. main cash cows still very much have .com top-level domains Google.com.and Youtube.com.
Old habits die hard if they die at all. Paul Graham advice is still quite valid and well worth taking into consideration if you are planning to play on a global scale.
Since .com domain name has no special significance, other than people perceive it to mean you are a serious Internet web site. Maybe Google is just playing with our minds after all. Or maybe they’re trying to prove a point?
