So recently i wanted to write an open letter to mtn about the termination of visa phone unlimited plan, and the ripple effect on developers, entrepreneurs and users in general, well I have not publish the letter so am just kidding, at the event (Google IO 2016)
I networked with Google developer relations manager and I asked about the Google loon project, what is the status , at least we see Facebook free basics in action, and hope for other of their open access solutions to follow suite in later years, he talked about how Google Nigeria is working at the background to partner with TELECOS for cheaper data bundles, and the uganga, ghana fibre optic project not reaching nigeria and it concerns.
Well it was such a conversation with him but the conversation left a topic to discuss here, if Visa phone can offer unlimited data plan for N1000 , then what is happening with the GSM TELECOS companies I know there is the data wars trending but how can at least N1000 be worth 10gb in Nigeria in 2016, of mean the bubble is heating, Glo, Mtn, Etisalat, Airtel was up, what do you think? @everyone.
@udemesamuel To be honest, the word āunlimited dataā is a fad. In the countries where they provide have unlimited data, thereās always some sort of data cap on it, so it is never truly unlimited.
MTN can give the unlimited data plan a try, but our society and system will abuse and misuse it to the fullest.
@PinkEngr N1000 for 1TB canāt be consumed completely by a developer talk less of of a user in one month. So that is real life definition for unlimited data at a cheap rate.
Thatās still a data cap, which could theoretically still be attained by someone.
Iāve heard some atrocious reports about the Visafone planās speed, though
@udemesamuel Yes looks unlikely, but we are forgetting that people/friends can share data through mobile hotspots, which can eliminate the needs for customers. MTN can give it a try, but I have a funny feeling that people in Nigeria will misuse them.
What service providers in the world gives a cap of 1TB? Thatā pretty huge
Agreed. I use Comcast and its unlimited. They experimented with placing a 250GB cap in some cities but the backlash caused them to backpedal on the decision. At this point, even if there is a 1TB cap, I doubt Iāll reach it even if I tried. Primary media consumption on the TV is over Netflix or Amazon Prime at full HD at an insane frequency (I know, I donāt have work), yet hereās my usage chart for the last three months. I basically do everything besides gaming at the moment.
That said, I believe the telcos in Nigeria can do 10GB for 1000 NGN if they so wish. However, as long as the group of people that require high caps per month are few and far between and willing to pay for it, the telcos will continue to milk it. Its economics that works in their favour unfortunately.
@udemesamuel The double asterisk beside Visafoneās āunlimitedā says a fair usage policy of 50GB applies.
Truth is Telcos can give 1 TB data cap, they just refuse to do so, Glo crashing the data market is due to the Glo-1 Submarine Fibre linew they have plus nTEL the new player in the Telco market about to launch fully in 2017, im betting it would drop even further and Nigerians will see theyve been cheated for almost 6 years +.
But damnā¦at 578 GB youre a data whale, do all go to Entertainment( Netflix, spotify et al) or is this a mix?
@xolubi >500GB is possible as shown in our top 10 users in Lekki phase 1. Sailors lounge is a wifi hotspot so it skews the data but regular ngierian home can consume 500GB a month easily.
