I know about a company called Check-DC, that used to do something similar to that. Only difference is, the ā€˜studentsā€™ stayed and worked for the company afterwards, rather than becoming part of a pool of talent, available to other organisations.

Not sure right now, if itā€™s still an active programme.

Indeed, I remember asking Andela the same question on Twitter why they are focusing only on programming but no answer.

Looking at the design of Nigerian mobile/web apps, this will be a good idea.

It could be a 2 or 3 yr programme. The basic foundations of design benefit all types of designers, 1 yr could be dedicated to this. In the second year, people choose what they want to specialise* in and run with it. The programme will be a mix of theory and real life work.

If this is for web design, will Andela for designers be able to monetize their studentsā€™ skills to make it a viable Andela-type business?

This model already exists and works, many design schools give their students to industry. Canā€™t see why it would be different in Nigeria

I guess it was from the ā€œwe are hiring Andela to get this doneā€ perspective that I got it wrong. Sure, nothing is to say the design school should copy Andelaā€™s exact model.

The question still remains though. A client of Andela for instance (at least the Nigerian ones Iā€™m aware of) want a product built end to end and contract it out to them. How often do you find people who would want web design done and are willing to pay a premium to a design school as against their ad agency?

The school itself will function as an agency, and like any other will bid for the work in many cases. They could also create own products to be sold.
We mustnā€™t think of design as a particular skillset it is a combination of things. So I think that people who might go through this school will be able to have products built end to end, if not, thereā€™s always contractors that could be brought in.
