Amazon in Africa

Go away when we needed black friday… Jumia was here for us. Thanks for visiting.

I thought so too, but while checking out some items on Amazon yesterday, I realized they would still be relevant…to some extent.

Not every item qualifies for international shipping, especially those sold by 3rd party merchants.

Just to buttress the point I made above…
Buying a PS4 bundle on Konga…

…versus buying a similar bundle from Amazon

Notice that the item itself is N16,132.88 cheaper to purchase on AMZ but throw in that 17k+ shipping and Import deposit fee and things take a different turn.

Plus the free shipping bit from our people here.

Sometimes buying local will actually make economic sense

I agree with @lordbanks " “buy from abroad” proxy shopping sites that really have something to worry about. At least at first. Konga and Jumia and co need lose no sleep yet."

The Amazon Shipping cost is still on the high side but i see it reducing when they really understand the Nigerian market, say another 6 months at that time Konga,Jumia and the rest can begin to worry.

the thing is the product categories for shipping to Nigeria is still so small not to talk of AmazonGlobal Priority Shipping

Konga and jumia aren’t in ‘direct’ competition with Amazon. But remember Amazon’s inventory is very huge, so some things may be worth buying from Amazon to some people.

Depending on the product you are buying, some product need careful handling, like human life…lol…Very fragile…very very fragile

Looks like Amazon’s AWS may also have its eyes on expanding cloud computing services from its Africa presence in SA - where they have been for about 10 years. http://www.lightreading.com/data-center/cloud-strategies/amazon-web-services-makes-its-africa-push/a/d-id/717986

If they were to start building data centers across the continent, at some point in time, and generate revenue from selling those services, that might be a good platform for subsequent ecommerce expansion.
