60,000 .ng versus 1,000,000 .za

I found it extremely difficult to give this post an appropriate title/summary because so many questions keep popping up. Why do we have just 60,000 registered .ng domain names as opposed over 1 million .za? Why do most nigeria-related websites still choose .com over say a .com.ng? Is it still a case of not appreciating what is ours? Is it a case of too little awareness? It is definately not a case of price because .com.ng would cost you just 1,500 naira a year while .com costs 1,700 naira.

So what do you think is the reason for this low number of .ng domains or how have the South Africans been able to succeed where we are still crawling?

.com.ng domain names are cheaper but most brands/startups want the .ng domain…and that’s usually an upward of 19,000 naira.

South Africa doesn’t have the 419 cloud hanging over them. I’m sure you’ll find similar stats if you compare .ru (Russia) to a similar nation.
Meaning businesses in these nations have more to gain in appearing to be beyond their shores than to be seen as indigenous or home grown.

but then, there are cheaper variants like .com.ng which is way cheaper than the “traditional” .com so does this mean that most people prefer the .ng just as @leslie mentioned earlier?

I’m I the only one who thinks .com rules the internet?

But hope we have not forgotten the internet is termed the ‘dot-com bubble crash’? I wasn’t the one who said that either.

Checkout 10 of the greatest websites around the globe, you’ll agree that the dot-com rules.
Have you ever told someone to checkout your website without giving the person the url extension? For instance,

Mr A: Hi Mr B, you look cool. Possible I get a name of the online store where you got this shirt?
Mr B: oh yes, checkout Flipo, they really got awesome stuffs.

Believe me or not, Mr A would go and type Flipo.com on his address bar to checkout. If the right domain has a .ng extension and there is actually another that has the .com extension, #AnotherMissedLead

But for those focusing on local market alone, not a bad idea to stick to your country’s extension but remember, coupled with your hard work at coming up with a successful business, you wouldn’t want to risk your business in domain selection because you are #TooPatriotic.

True, i use to think Marks website was hotels.com and i mosttimes forget linda still uses .blogspot.com

True @BalogunDanjuma! But she also maintains lindaikeji.net; which redirects you to the *.blogspot.com

If .ng would just have Sales for couple of weeks, the discount might attract more parties.
