So, you have been reading a lot about why YOU should learn how to program. But how about you give your children a head start? Here are a reasons your children should write code.
-
It teaches critical reasoning skills: Not all children who learn to program would end up being Developers, just like not all kids who study Math in Elementary School end up becoming Math professors. Programming, however, does teach you problem solving and reasoning skills that are transferable to other areas of life.
-
It is has been called the new “literacy”: There have been those who claim (not without controversy), that it is the new literacy. It is essentially a skill you have to learn to get a decent job as we move further and further in the 21st Century. There have been rumors that some American Law Firms only employ lawyers who can code!
-
Coding develops trans-curricular creative skills: It doesn’t matter whether you are in Artist or in the Sciences, there is nothing as sweet as seeing work you created come to life. They develop creative skills that can be applied to almost any field of endeavor, giving themselves an advantage over their peers.
-
Coding is easier if you start at a young age: I don’t mean if you start your kid off with C/C++! But if if they start with drag and drop languages like Scratch, by they time they pick up Python at 12, and C++ at 16, they’d have been used to the programming mindset.
