This has been bothering me for quite some time now. I traveled to the United states last year and noticed that broadband internet in use there completely dwarfs the fastest broadband internet in Africa. And what is even better is that it is very cheap and affordable as compared to the insane prices being quoted for menial amounts of slower internet connections provided by ISPs in Africa.
Could someone please explain why this is so?
This post should explain the cost of getting access to Africa

Then there’s the issue of getting it to the last mile. Regulations and Levies
Good piece. Thanks.
While following up on the story. I stumbled upon this link to another great article about a similar topic. Culture & Empire Digital Revolution by Pieter Hintjens
There was this blog post from Jason Njoku comparing Nigerian internet plans to other African countries (we pay more per GB even on the same network like MTN) so stuff like the cost of running generators contribute. Also, in the US, not every broadband user is a power user. So >50% subscribers can subsidize the cost for the rest. In Africa where internet access is not that broad, every one of your users uses all you (as the ISP) can offer. There’s hardly a demographic who pay for, say 20gb a month and use only 5gb.
