Bro @bedy nobody really is disputing that fact man. As a matter of fact you can make great stuff from anywhere. Mark started Hotels.ng in calabar not Lagos but currently is in Lagos. Start with what you have from where you are. That’s what i believe bro. When the need arises if you need to move(yes you may need to) then you do.
I have been here for 11 years and I work here so trust me I know what am saying.
Let’s not go off topic anyways.
Lol I’ve given up!. You guys won.
Because More than 40% of internet users reside in Lagos Nigeria
Whether you’re in lagos, ph or abuja. Just play it wisely and you’ll so much get there
Why Lagos? Simple answer: Economies of Scale!
It will really be interesting to know what you have built that Obio Akpor boys stopped you from building. Can you quit demarketing your city already? Maybe you don’t live in Port Harcourt after all. For everything negative you have in Port Harcourt, it exists in other climes too. People just find a way around their challenges and build awesome stuffs. You probably haven’t heard how Lagos state Government almost killed Konga before it started. Thanks
Clearly the focus is on my mention of PH rather than the point I was trying to make was the availability of an enabling environment.
On this matter of Obio/Akpor boys, just leave that talk. I see and get constant feedback of their antics everytime.
Don’t presume I am out to demarket the city of PH. Even Lagos for all its positives, has it’s negatives too same as PH.
Is the goal to be well known, or to be profitable, with a larger ROI? Sure, being popular can translate to more revenues, but who’s to say that you cannot grow in your niche, and wait for the Lagos big boys to acquire you when they come to expand in your town?
We’re based in Abuja but the data doesn’t lie: most of the users for our product are in Lagos. We end up travelling to Lagos a lot. Thus it’s only a matter of time before we create an official Lagos presence.
So as far as the consumption of tech products is concerned, Lagos is where it’s at. Now you can have a tech team or back office anywhere in the world, but for sales, marketing and most of your business dev, you invariably need boots on the ground in Lagos.
Just because some experts “argue” that Lagos is the perfect startup destination, it does not necessarily mean your startup should focus on Lagos.
Actually, the best place to locate your startup is where your customers are.
Ask @henryC, he runs a school CRM business based outside of Lagos with (let’s say) 40% market share of the Eastern Nigeria market instead of coming to Lagos to struggle for 0.00001% market share.
I went as far as to ask him the location question: ARE YOU COMING TO LAGOS?
You can read item 3 of this post for his answer
P.S: I have been actively living in Lagos since 2009, but I have seen skyscrapers everywhere else too
Thanks for featuring Klipboard on your blog. We really appreciate.
I believe possibilities abound in Ibadan also. Taxi hailing company with the right knowledge of the city could thrive and many more other services that start ups could render.
Looking for a new city to tap into? Look at Ibadan.
This is the briefest most accurate answer. But hey, if you are lucky enough to be well connected in some other city that you find a tangible market, why not?
Lagos has the data, the numbers, the users, the enabling enviroment etc. I grew up in ph, I relocated to Accra, been to Abuja back and forth a few times, but i cant stop going to lagos for business. the numbers dont lie mehn
…the same reason why almost all companies slug it out to have their headquarters situated here.
