The Netflix of Africa is...Netflix

Back to Netflix: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10852261

Edit: Earlier this week when word got out that Netflix’s budget for programming this year was higher than that of every other US cable network, @seyitaylor thought it was “asheju”. Now we see why.

“Content is King”, actually that’s wrong because it should be the “Right Content is King”.
I never really liked iRokotv that much because the content they deliver do not in a any way appeal to me. Except for some spectacular hollywood movies like (October 1st, 30 days in Atlanta, Jenifa, Road to Nowhere, etc), i can say that am not really a big fan of hollywood’s movies.
The main problem now is that these so called spectacular movies never launched on iRokoTv, we all still had to go to the cinemas to watch them.
This is so unlike what Netflix or HBO offers.

So now, am excited for Netflix coming to Nigeria because for me, the problem wasn’t data (it never was), it was about the RIGHT CONTENT

Interesting. Netflix is a vocal net neutrality advocate. Is this ISP arrangement consistent with that stance?

Technically, if the ISPs are serving the content from within their own data centers closest to the end user, it costs them little to nothing, and as such can afford to offer it for free and devoid of charges towards your quota, unless you think your ISP letting you visit their website to renew your subscription to access the wider internet is in violation of net neutrality. Granted, its a grey area… but that’s my thought on this.

This is cute and all but I just spent way too much time trying to download a 480p version of a show I wanted to watch. I can’t imagine how annoying streaming a movie would be. Not to mention the actual data limits. Geo-restrictions was never my issue with Netflix, internet was.

The usage numbers after one year will make for depressing reading for local VOD entrepreneurs. You just KNOW that Africans will bend over backwards to be seen as trendy Netflix members.

Very soon, Nigerian Telcos will be like, we are offering Netflix package at #300 per movie, or something like that.

This drivel is getting tiring. Africans already watch Game of Thrones even though HBO is not in Africa. Most of us here have probably watched House of Cards. When was the last time anyone here legit pirated a show that is supposed to be on iRokoTV? Spotify vs Spinlet, anyone?

Let’s be reasonable please.

Yes. Let’s blame the colonial masters for a wider selection.

This is very ignorant. Quite frankly. People don’t use a service because it is foreign or local but if it serves them or not.

If Nollywood starts producing my kind of content, I’m on iroko. I’ll pay a year or Netflix not because of any of the above nonsense but because I prefer House of cards to Superstory.

And I’ll never apologize for preferring Matt Pond PA to Skirobo skibo from Lil Kesh. It’s a global economy now, and no one gives a shit where you are from, make something and you’ll appeal to those you will appeal to.

I know folks that are constant on iroko and Africa magic. Meanwhile, I can’t stand 15 mins of it.

Sean Tizzle, the other day comparing Omawumi’s cover of Hello to Adele’s original bashing Nigerians for preferring Adele’s. We are that fucked now.

Africans want what they don’t deserve or qualify for, and when they don’t get it, they claim its because they are Africans or blacks.

Be great, and watch the universe take charge. The same way I’m big fan of Hozier, I listen to everything Asa. Similarly, I paid to watch October 1 and half of yellow sun at the cinema.

I’m writing this long because this is constantly recurring and its quite irritating.

I don’t have the luxury of Smile or Sprectranet where i currently reside. But i just need Etisalat to expand on their 400 Naira/2hr video streaming plan. But someone in Abuja is already giving guys the real keys to success.

Jesus, I shouldn’t want good entertainment because I’m an African and must consume African. What year is it abeg? And how did we end this way?

If I must extend, It also means I should turn down a Stanford/MIT admission for Unilag because I’m Nigera.

How about we upgrade and start making actual great stuff, and watch the response.

Interesting conversation.

Thoss words you spoke, they were revealed to you. Thank you!

Did anyone also realise that this is a preemptive strike against ShowMax from Naspers?

ShowMax was supposed to be available in those 130 countries all at once? With original programming? Tell us more.

Ima just leave this here:

I’ve been watching Netflix via VPN for a while. I’ve even watched ONE Nollywood movie. I also listen to Olamide on Apple Music. I listened to Phyno on Deezer. I just like clean products that deal with the fact that I have various sides - a side that enjoys “local” content and another that enjoys “Western” content.
