I believe the country with the most inspiring developer labor pile is india.
In india, you start out with Equivalent of $400 - $500
If you are lucky to graduate top from any of the indian institutes of technology and land at microsoft , you get $1200 - $1400.
Barring the devaluation of the naira or even with it, I think this is in line with what we have in Nigeria.
I think techies are totally different from political lobbyists.
These people (lobbyists) have an interest and they push it to the legislative arm of government.
I donât know many of them, but I can bet that the big technology firms (CWG, SystemSpecs, SW, etc.) have people who do this.
If you remain in the startup / SME mode for too long you may never realize that such things are even possible and actually in effect.
Normally, the voice of the many overrides that of the few, but when it comes to politics the reverse is the case.
The few big companies know this and work to preserve their business and profit.
We need to find a common ground that we can all clearly relate with, seeing we are many and have diverse interests.
That common ground happens to be what not only startups need to survive, but something the entire country is clamoring for - power supply! And secondarily bandwidth.
At this point I might want to suggest finding another less vitriolic common ground. But then we are diverse in our needs.
The starting point would be for us to have a place to measure what startups need to grow against what we have over time.
Silicon valley we all know grew due to a need for technology to gain the advantage in World war II.
Our needs presently look trivial to those at the helm of affairs, as they can afford their own power and bandwidth.
So ask, what does your startup need the most to grow?
Education, Power, Space, Bandwidth, Funding, Skilled staff, Food?
Well said onyeka.
Youâve spoken as an entrepreneur. I remember when I was doing cashflow analysis for my current business. I quickly understood the impact of raising employeesâ salaries by 5% when your cash inflow has not grown proportionally. This is aside all the other costs of the business.
Bottom line, there is no basis for comparing the Nigerian tech with SV tech industry.
Uâve said it - Cost of Living
Living in Califonia (San Francisco to be more precise) is more expensive than living in Texas.
Also compare living in Lagos (say VI or Ikeja) to living in Ota
Often cost of living is factored in when it comes to Salary - Sure our devs are not paid well but if start ups can start some change in cultures, in no time techs will start influencing the scale.
Sometimes its not about the Salary but other incentives and addons to make life comfortable for the devs
