I canāt stop laughing at this!
This logic is not right.
Those are Physicists not Computer Scientists. FORTRAN. meaning Formula Translation was a particular programming language that was optimized for solving scientific and numeric problems.
While this things might make sense to a Physicist it probably has no use to the Computer Scientist. A computer scientist is not going to build a particle accelerator. Heās probably going to build web servers, databases, embedded systems, Compilers, operating systesm, APIs. And this is me being generous.
Computer Scientists in Nigeria are building PHP-Laravel, Python-Django, Ruby-Rails websites, android applications, iOS and WIndows applications, Hybrid (Ionic, Phonegap, React Native, NativeScript, Xamarin Applications). Desktop applications and things of that nature. Its only recently some of us have started taking interests in Machine Learning and AI. Its high time we start teaching our students skills thatāll actually make them useful in the real world and not have to re-learn everything when they graduate. And this is not particular to only Computer Science. (Trust me, I know)
Computer Science is broad. Physicists need it. Electrical Engineers need it. Mechanical Engineers are using it. Point is: we are all using them for different things. We have to appreciate that and work with that.
By all means Physicist can still keep using FORTRAN.Electrical Engineers I know use MatLab (It works for them) I even read somewhere that COBOL is still actively utilized in some realms (Which realms you say? Donāt know, Donāt care)
If Mr A wants to make an app for his android wristwatch, Heās gonna call a Computer Scientist not Physicist. Just like I donāt expect a Physicist to use Swift, Objective-C + iOS SDK when trying to build a nuclear reactor.
Even in various realms of software engineering. There are still tools(programming languages) which are most appropriate for the problem case. Point is we shouldnāt be looking at Physicists. Let the Physicists look to other physicists using FORTRAN and draw inspiration from them.
You nailed it, definitely nailed it! I studied CS in a Nigerian public school and I can resonate with this.
You nailed it, with one exception. Computer scientist != Computer programmer. You used āscientistā instead of programmer in a couple of places.
I think I owned maybe 1 or 2 actual notebooks throughout uni. Everything else was on a laptop. I mean, itās COMPUTER SCIENCE ffs!
So whatās the point of going to a uni thatāll be teaching you FORTRAN? Might as well just run through all the courses on codecademy, no?
Try laracasts.com you will learn Php basic, oop and laravel. Jeffrey way is an awesome teacherā¦ You will enjoy every bit and want to learn more. No boring moment.
Exactly, If i spend 4 years learning theory and ZERO life based application, its useless to me best approach, each year a new programming language, theory and then practical so u graduate sounded in at least 2 major coding languages and understand theory behind them.
Thanksā¦means alot.
