NIRA (Nigeria Internet Registration Association) "May" soon destroy the confindence of Nigerians in .NG Domains

Thanks once again. I think you’re right that even at N15,000k - the domains are not prohibitively expensive for serious entrepreneurs. But if the goal is to increase adoption and make even more money - then in my opinion - it’s better to remove this barrier. Of course, one can also say a key goal of NIRA is to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurs, and a way of doing that is by removing obstacles.

I’m happy to become a member. And I looked at the link you provided and read the document (which gives a good overview of your decision making process), but can’t see where it talks about the exact membership fees. Which leads me to another question (related to above) - why should I pay (even if it’s 5 naira), to join NIRA?

Let me explain this last point. I’ve been a professional busy-body for many years. I’ve earned a lot of money by offering my opinions (same as I’ve freely given NIRA). Luckily, I’m also good at it because I’m the rare type - optimistic. Optimistic because when things don’t work out, (that’s life), I don’t get despondent and still want to help. In summary, I would offer value. Hence why I feel it’s strange, as it appears that I have to pay NIRA to help NIRA.

Which brings me to my original point - we (NIRA in this case), need to take a long term view on the impact of our decisions and approach.

I remember someone requesting am AMA with a NIRA exec sometime last year and now the NIRA president is here.

@lordbanks have you sent him a message?

Then you’ll have folks hoard domain names they don’t need.

Dear Sir,
with all due respect.
Since you can not clarify my number 1 and 3 facts and not answering my number 2 question. But rather clarified it as being “guestimating the intentions of NIRA” and with all you have said, i believe the title of this Thread or (Post) has been Justified.

Then, i will now leave everything to GOD, the Author and Finisher of our Faith. And i pray for myself that, Everything i had lost following due process because of these .NG GEO Domain Names, My GOD will restore them back to me in Trillion folds in JESUS Name, AMEN.

Thank you all,
Realone

I feel there are easy workarounds to discourage hoarding. For instance, make one domain free for one year that’s similar to your company house registration name. So in this case, if I register Andrews Nigeria Limited at CAC, then NIRA can allow me to have variations of andrew.ng for a year.

I’m not saying it’s perfect, but I think it would discourage large scale bad behaviour. Someone shouldn’t be able to just sit down at their PC & register 100’s of names.

While he’s here, go ahead and ask

What you just described is not easy actually.

Absolutely!!! A registrar is offering .com.ng for N999. Tell me the excuse! Even a UBER ride to CAC is much more expensive than that.

I am now editing old posts, since you have refused to upgrade me to Cabal because of the many questions on this thread.

Seriously, the cost is not in Domain Registration but hosting. Unless you want to park the domain and speculate, any serious entrepreneur that can afford hosting, will afford the domain name that goes with it.

If you tried shopping, you will see that some of the NIRA accredited registrars offer free domain name registrations with their hosting platforms. I think the serious businessmen in the community are taking advantage of these opportunities, instead for squeezing NIRA that is solely in the business of managing .ng and not into the business of Hosting, which has a higher value.

Why are entrepreneurs interested in .ng and not .com.ng? Eating omelettes without breaking eggs? Is there any free idea anywhere in the world? Ideas cost money. If it worth having a domain, there should be a value people are willing to attach to it. I think what is important is a reasonable cost. Not free and not an exploitative cost. We do strike a balance in NIRA.

Experience has shown that the biggest trouble-makers in service delivery are the people on the lowest rung of the value chain. If we make it free in the first year, where do we recover the money to keep the Staff, Facilities and Servers going? We run a business, we are a PPP, we are not a Government funded agency. How do we the million masses who get the domains happy? How do we compensate the Staff who support them?

We do want the numbers, indeed, we consistently drop prices to grow numbers, but if the experience is as pathetic as our individual experiences on some of our Nigerian highways, I am sure the lurkers on the forum will be the first to say … “Why not make us pay, in as much as we will get the services?”.

Guys … it is a value based thing. At the current price, it is attractive to someone who wants one domain to start off one business, or two. It is not attractive to the Nigerian who wants to be a Domaineer, who will buy ten domains and sell each one in 5 years for one million dollars each. He obiously will tie down 10x15,000x5 which is 750,000. That is not what a budding domaineer can afford, and I agree.

On membership, Your argument is the classic argument why the intelligent people stay away from Governance, and leave the crud within the society to continue to take on leadership positions. I will counsel that if it is of value to you and your friends, get your friends to pay your membership fees. Again, if the membership is free, even motor-park touts will come on election day, and choose touts as leaders.

The intelligent Nigerians like those on this forum should care about who leads them at all levels, and guys … it is not cheap. Get your friends to invest in you for the future of you and your friends.

Nice meeting you guys!

Well … you probably sent a paper invitation, thinking the President is a digital immigrant. I am native! @sfolayan on twitter, blogging on www.facebook.com/sfolayan and medium.com/@sundayfolayan With technology, who needs a middleman to schedule a meet these days?

I have reached the limit of the number of responses I can make. If you want me to stay engaged, please persuade the admins to upgrade me to the status of a cabal

Any objections?

Hi, @sfolayan. Nice to have you here. Sorry for diverting the thread a bit:
Can you provide more details as regards the recent MOU signed by NIRA with AFRINIC?

The African Network Information Center (AFRINIC) Ltd, one of the world’s five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) and the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) Academy, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently in Nairobi, Kenya, to develop and certify skills in Internet Number Resources Management and IPv6 in Nigeria

Haha… None at all… Over to you @lordbanks

If this post appears, then it worked! I owe you a drink.

Loving this impromptu AMA.

The AFRINIC ipv6 Programme is at http://www.afrinic.net/en/services/ipv6-programme

AFRINIC also runs Trainings, and these are documented at www. afrinic. net/en/services/training

Specifically, the IPv6 courses are IPv6 Forum (Gold) Certified and are fully hands-on, making use of AFRINIC’s extensive IPv6 test-bed access which gives participants hands-on experience on real equipment to configure, test and troubleshoot IPv6.

The URL for the training portal is at http://learn.afrinic.net

NIRA’s involvement is to be a certification test partner as well as a local Training center.

The MOU is now signed … roll out shortly. In the meantime, go ahead, register and start the Training online!!

Did I mention the fact that I am also privileged to chair the Board of AFRINIC at this time? Very important, because these types of MOUs are the true dividends of democracy. Making complementary institutions really complement themselves because of the activities of functional glues between them.

Thank you Boss. Please be kind to allow me more than 2 links in each post  Cabals have too much privileges in this community, I am envious!

Well, actually, brief orientation:

  1. I’m not an admin or a moderator. In this forum’s software (see http://discourse.org) admins have power to do virtually anything, moderators are there to…oderate, and “Cabal” is the name TC chose for the third trust level users can reach.

  2. Trust levels:

  • basic user
  • member
  • cabal
  • leader
  1. Promotion/demotion across trust levels is mostly automated, so the software won’t allow you do certain things, since you just signed up. However, keep posting like you’re doing, and you’ll soon earn the “member” privilege.
