NetFlix vs. iROKOtv: iROKOtv is (probably) going to fight NetFlix to a standstill

Netflix user here

like i said, just curiousā€¦

I use Netflix religously. Iā€™ll jump on iRoko tv too once they start producing quality original content. Itā€™s just a matter of time. I know Jason is working on that at the moment.

Narcos is a solid example of local content executed with international standards. We have better stories. We just need the right directors and writers with the vision to execute properly.

Actually I think the real local winners will be cinema operators like Filmhouse

how does streaming help cinemas?

Cinemas are a more cost effective distribution model for content due to the high cost of bandwidth and limited access.

Cinemas can also ā€œstreamā€ content and be an extension of platforms like Iroko.

Itā€™s all about viewers. 100 people watching a big screen at a cinema can make the economics work well for content owners.

Not in Nigeria, it isnā€™t.

Youā€™d think at first they only screen films of certain artistic and production acclaim, until you find every thing from Royal Arts Academy gets a free pass with Genesis / Silverbird.

There are so many red tapes for the little guy to cut that he wonā€™t be worth a pair of scissors after heā€™s done.

Content producers have gotten savvy, agreements they sign with the likes of Iroko may only permit online distribution. Negotiations with Cinemas, an entirely separate deal!

Bottom line: itā€™s easier to get 100 ppl to pay to see a screening at $3 a pop. Than to get 50 ppl to subscribe to a streamig service at $6 a month, bandwidth ainā€™t cheap and is not widely accessible.

The content owner would be glad to get a cut of that flow.

The big screen economic model makes more sense for emerging markets with poor broadband penetration.

FYI. IMAX is not coming to Nigeria to loose money. Filmhouse must have made a compelling argument.

I think cinema is a completely different experience. Itā€™s a night out. You donā€™t always want a night out. Streaming has its own place. People who stream still go out to the cinemas. and vice versa.

Thatā€™s not part of my argument.

You said Cinemas are a more cost effective distribution model for producers? Am saying the red tapes to cut with the cinemas is usually a deterrent especially for small time producers regardless of their stuff.

Ok. Noted. I was not clear on where the red tape was. I thought younger referring to challenges in setting up a cinema.
