MTN just ruined SMS business for everyone!

Will your users still be charged if a message does not deliver because of the DND?

Yes. All messages are currently being billed by the providers.

How is thisā€¦?

Depending on the Market Acquisition platforms, VAS Firms partner with mobile intelligence companies who have platforms that target regions of any country from the base towers et al( technical jargon), hence they can craft messages to this regions in ways that drive quick opt ins.

Peeps up north from record and experience have opted in more for advertised services than any other region, might be people just like recieving the texts while Lagos has the lowest record and we can inferr that many lagosians just delete the texts as they recieve them so very low Opt-in.

Am aware of location specific targeting.

Curious as to the varied success rates in-between regions and as to why. Had someone from a top VAS company recently allude to same, without a real why.

I would guess the stiff competition in Lagos left many disillusioned in its wake. In other words, men don corrupt SMS for we people.

lol baba make we talk backstage, let me not give out few secrets here before dem come for me.

Itā€™s the same reason why you get higher ad clickthrough rates from users in developing countries. Everything is still a novelty and they are clicking/opting in out of curiosity. You probably clicked on more ads and opted in to more services in in the past.

TLDR; Average poverty rates are higher in the North compared to Lagos so there are more people to whom a phone, SMS, apps, etc are new things, so they tend to click / optin more.

You hit on the nail a little but its more indepth than that though.

They see some of the services as useful, like the Sports and News Alert Services or Bet tips and Religious words Services these have a 500x uptake than anywhere else that hv made companies like MTech smile to the bank.

Iā€™m on DND. Airtel hasnā€™t stopped bugging me with messages and calls, though.

Ah. I didnā€™t try them out. I reached out to all the telcos for comment while writing my report and Airtel said the DND code stops all messages. Iā€™ll update the report now, thanks.

See, this network operators canā€™t frustrate usā€¦ We will build our own bulk SMS service. We did it to payments. A bulk SMS platform cannot be more difficult.

WHen can i start usually using Paysob? Your demo wowed me but Unfortunately, you still havent let we Muggles in

@hienyimba Soon, hopefully. Paysob is ready for a public beta (and we are ready to roll out) but the MTN mast that covers our office where we house our servers is currently having some issues so we canā€™t connect to the MTN network. An MTN engineer is currently on his way to our office to see how we can move to another mast. Once that is fixed, weā€™re open for business (so to speak).

[UPDATE]
So just met with the engineer who after running diagnostics finally told me the problem (which I donā€™t want to repeat here so I donā€™t deface another company). Suffice to say, we are moving to a new, temporary office space.

Airtel is giving their customers the option to opt out of some services or activate full DND. I use Airtel and I have activated DND.

Does anyone here know if these changes also affect transactional SMS?

It seems this service covers activation SMS because I tried signing up on the Nairabox app and I am yet to get a SMS from them. Anyone else share the same experience?

From what i understand, Bank Alerts which are sent through special routes are not affected. Other transactional SMS which are sent through normal marketing routes like 2FA, Phone Number Verification etc will be affected. See more at www.mtnonline.com/dnd

that is insane:

Iā€™m not aware of any other country that blocks transactional SMS.

Unless they already have some special arrangements in place, even platforms like Whatsapp that use transactional SMS for phone number verification would be affected by this type of change.

Even from the mtnonline site I see this quote:

ā€œThe Do-Not-Disturb service allows MTN customers to opt out of receiving promotional messages for 3rd Party services (Bulk SMS, VAS promos, etc.)ā€

So I suspect the intent is not to block transactional SMS.

So after hours of monotonous manual labour, weā€™ve finally compile the list of all our subscribers who have not been getting SMS from us because MTN put them on DND list without informing them and it came up to approximately 12%. Now imagine manually sending out SMS to 12% of thousands of subscribers apologizing for something you didnā€™t do. You should know when you need an alternative solution.

How were you able to tell those whose numbers are on DND from those numbers which are no longer active?
Is there a platform or tool I can use for that?
