Is There No Tech Hub In Akwa Ibom State?

Google I/O Extended presently at The Roothub. Good one @Francis_Onuk @Tony_Onuk your good work will changed the face of tech in Uyo.

Thanks but the credit should go to Start Innovation hub founder, Hanson Johnson who is the Google Dev. leader in the South-South and attended the 2016 Google I/O USA last month. We(The RootHub) are just hosting the event. Thanks all the same for finding time to show-up to see over 35 young tech guys on the verge of disrupting the nation.

Many folks do businesses in Akwa Ibom mostly around buying and selling. You are more likely to find small scale POS businesses there. I have two aunts who run a pharmacy and have an Oracle databases in their back office and just one guy runs the business of supplying those. I have a cousin who runs a vehicle tracking business to track Government vehicles. So Sole proprietorship kind of business is the culture there.

There are some tech businesses there, they just donā€™t aim beyond the state or look to be featured in blogs.

Iā€™m not disputing your point(s). What I found (and think is a serious issue) is that the average indigent youth is not entrepreneurial.
Most of the businesses run by youths in Uyo (thatā€™s where I stayed, and can speak of) are run by non-indigenes, of which the Igbos (or Ibos?) are a majority.

I agree with your point of view.

I lived in Eket, Akwa Ibom for two years and I know the folks out there are smart and hungry. However, I donā€™t think AKS can be considered a tech hub at this level. I feel Akwa Ibom is quite small but has a huge potential to be a tech-driven city. UberX, niche e-Commerce and other ideas can be tested and managed easily.

On the other hand, I believe tech can create massive job opportunities. The level of literacy is above average and residence are very hard working. The govt of AKS need to capitalize on these features, encourage free training and tech infrastructure development*. Akpabio started a good job with physical infrastructureā€¦there should be continuity of some sort hopefully

  • I had a proposal for a free tech training activity during my period but I struggled to meet with the Eket L.G.A. Apparently, he never works from his office.

I am in deep shock to hear someone actually say aka Ibom people are lazy and that no tech hub, every year I travel down to aka Ibom for entrepreneurial trainings, starthub innovation is the best techhub I know in the country, they have numerous project including afropot, aloe of things is going on there, do your research before jumping to conclusions

Where did you get this from?

@Effyboy I understand there are tech hubs like (StartHub Innovation Founder Hanson) in uyo but you canā€™t shy away from the fact that the publicity is not there in uyo. One can exist without being known just like you.
Start ups in the state should run more publicity so that people who are interested in their programmes can locate them. My Point

@Tolulope_Owajoba_Ade from what i can see WAAW foundation and Awele Academy are one, and it seems you focus mainly on women empowerment. Pls an insight on what you plan to do in Akwa Ibom? I believe Radarians will like to know some of your packages for Akwaibomites. Thanks.

Hi @Enutrof, thanks for the interest in our ecosystem. Now that you know there are hubs in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, what next? We will be happy to assist you achieve your dreams.

Also, I doubt you did this before this post. Start Innovation Hub specifically is visible and always try in syncing with the Lagos ecosystem.

A typical Uyo person is not lazy. If his level of input is applied in Lagos, he will not be seen as a lazy person.

@ukay, apart from the Igbo brothers, indigenes too have several businesses ranging from Hospitality, Health, Commerce to ICT etc. Even in Lagos, it is still the Igbos that run the city. I am not sure whether we can find an outstanding business there owned by a Lagos indigene.
