How do you explain working at/on a startup to Nigerian (African) parents?

yeah, I am sure parents will love that explanation. lol

Initially, my dad was all supportive and still is but nowadays, he always complains about how long i spend on the computer and what I do exactly. Then explanation comes but he just gives you the ‘I don’t understand a word look but I pray God blesses your hussle.’

My dad used to work in communications so I just told him I do what they do but for the Internet

Yesso - where I for put them? hehehe

First time here.

I feel parents just want to know you’re not whiling away your time. The problem with coding is that we spend so much time seating in one place staring at our laptops. My mom and dad just thinks that i’m playing games on my PC “sigh”

I bet if I was leaving home early in the morning and coming back at 9:00pm every night, it probably won’t be this bad. You’ll find it difficult to convince the average Nigerian you can be productive just by sitting in front on your computer.

But like all things in Nigeria, if the market is there for your products, parents would be the ones pushing their children into IT. I pray we get there though.

Is it only parents? is even more hard to explain to your friends why you don’t always go out with them or visit them because you’re working on something that will …

I believe it’ll explain itself at when due.

Maybe the remedy would actually be leaving the house - if only co-work spaces were extremely cheap. There was something I read about a service starting off in France, where people are given the option of using their houses for co-work spaces. I wonder if its still on…It is well

And we are enjoying the product now. Hope you show her this testimony.
