I believe huge opportunities exist for media contents in Africa. I have once imagined a live classroom / video driven training sessions / webinars that can disrupt the traditional learning environments and content publishing. However, while iRoko has a leading edge, it appears we are still far away from true realisation. I took a snap shot of the current facebook live video by region and wasn’t surprised.

So heres my 2 cents. We would soon see growth in Facebook Live Videos as mobile data is becoming cheaper and cheaper. I was quite enamoured by Facebook Live when it launched and have tried once. The first time I tried using it at one of Mamalette’s events, the quality was very poor due to the mobile data signal I was getting, you can see it here https://www.facebook.com/MamaletteNG/videos/1073999206021196/
Now compare it to other videos shot with a camera, the response was better from our audience.
I think streaming training sessions or webinars can work but ultimately users will only want to ‘waste’ cheap data on good quality videos.
We will get more people using facebook live after a while, its just like YouTube. Initially, not many Nigerian channels were on YouTube but now you see quite a number as well as channels that are backed by corporate entities (e.g. ndani tv by gtbank).
Your point about youtube channels still doesn’t show improvement. It just speaks to the demand for Nigerian content by Nigerians in the diaspora. Most of those channels, as well as Nigerian music videos get more hits from outside the country.
You are right about the Youtube growth.
Again, with Youtube, viewers can schedule a convenient time to visit the platform. In most cases, they tend to visit the platform at work or places where internet connection is readily available and possibly free.
Facebook live video is primarily developed for instant publishing and engagement. Live streaming generally has the potential to generate real-time engagement, views, opinions and most importantly original media content. Any media group not plugging into this opportunity will miss out when the vision fully manifest.
@Mamalette The margins were quite much with the second attempt. Did you sponsor it?
Video 1 was boosted with $20
Video 2 with $3
