Where is @wkyo when you need him?
I donāt see a justification for closing the thread eitherā¦ Though I certainly donāt agree with the ādaily updatesā idea. Really, hotels.ng is privately owned.
I think the moderators should have issued some kind of warning, perhaps with pointers at how exactly leaving the thread in its current state would have been bad for the community, and letting the contributors know what they were doing wrong.
All hail the supreme leader Kim Seyi Taylor!!!
I told sir Seyi to stay out of the daily bustlings as before, leaving Mr banks who is more experienced in that department, given repeated incidences.
But no, he had to take us back to the days when a thread took a shot to the head and continues to bleed after 2 days.
An unnatural death.
Common @wkyo, the house needs you! Please come out strong!!! And the drum rollsā¦
I actually gave you 24 hours to respond as it was your fight before setting my Agbero powers in motion. You have done well and house is behind you.
I was particularly pissed off as I was having an intresting conversation with xolubi on some intresting findingsā¦
Ride on Bro! A luta continua, vitĆ³ria Ć© cert!!!
Lol @Tola
Letās cut @seyitaylor some slack. He probably reviewed the Radar guidelines and came to the conclusion that one or more of them were being violated. Now if he can just enlighten the house as to which onesā¦
Tola, I agree. The thread was starting to exhibit very healthy discussions on Internet Security, a topic which is sadly hardly ever discussed on Radar.
Thank you brother. We will do it again another time! Thanks for helping in the raising the awareness about internet privacy and security.
Itās quite unfortunate that the thread had to die so prematurely. But Iām comforted by the fact that the thread achieved some purpose before its untimely death. Thank you for your support sir!
I discovered the thread was closed when I attempted submitting an already composed reply to you. Ah, wellā¦
@seyitaylor; Let me first assure you that my intent is not to offend or merely be provocative. Iām simply worried.
We can have a first time; āThread Unlockingā Treat.
I have observed that a truly great library of Radarās thread contains something in it to offend everyone.
@xolubi; I believe you! Maybe a thread on āSniffing HTTP Post Passwordā will welcome that pending reply.
I think thread closure is always an interesting one. As @87_chuks mentioned, weāve had strange calls in the past. It was also one of my bugbears which Iāve raised after seeing it first hand;
For instance, back in Octoberā¦in a thread also surprisingly called Radar So Far, I raised 2 points;
And just several days agoā¦I asked @lordbanks
And this was in responseā¦
In this case, it appears to fall under the āoutlived its usefulnessā (which might be debatable but requires a judgment call). In any case, what we need to work on is communicating that better. So at least everyone will know whatās going to happen.
In all, I think when thread closure happens; some people are pissed off, some are happy and some frankly, think what took so long! But the bad cases are always when no one knows itās going to happen. I think we need to remove the surprise element. So in this context, when we use the word community, it signifies that while a conversation is ongoing, which the community is very much engaged in, then thereās little chance of it being arbitrarily shut down.
Interesting. Arguably the most useful post on Radar outlived itās usefulness.
Was that thread heading for closure? Probably. If @Ndianabasi had followed through on his promise to keep updating the thread daily with his righteous crusade, aka forum gaming. Where @seyitaylor erred was closing a thread where people other than @Ndianabasi were actively having a newly useful conversation. So while it technically had outlived its usefulness (trying to catch @Markās attention, Iām sure he noticed the first time, and it was already getting weirdly obsessive), the thread had assumed a new and useful purpose, albeit right before its closure. We apologise. Mods/admins are human, and we wonāt always make the best call in every situation. All we can do is try and get better.
@papaolabode is absolutely right about removing the surprise element for thread closure. But that is not all. Heās actually been goading me for weeks to release a bunch of pre-discussed community-wide updates that will clarify a lot of issues. Weāve begun to implement a lot of the feedback thatās emerged from this conversation. Dormant mods are gone. Weāre putting more wood behind fewer moderation arrows. The next generation of moderation will not just be about enforcing the rules, but also about nurturing high quality conversations. The TechCabal news bot is currently being iterated till it properly serves its original purpose of linking the community and the portal in a way that virtuously enhances both. I promise you that weāre working on these things and more.
Emā¦Radar so far, not so good
Thanks for the update. Keep up the good work; hopefully we as Radar users can take responsibility and do our part to foster a positive environment while the mods and founders actively steer this ship in the right direction.
No one wants to be on a ship with a busted radar - sorry couldnāt resist that pun!
I will await your post on the subject and then present you with my line of thought about the wealth of information that can be harvested by correlating email addresses vs cost of purchase (all in the URL parameters) to help convert a maga. In meantime, kudos and well done on your efforts.
This just hit me @lordbanks; you guys should create a Category and name it āTrash Canā so when a post drives down a trashlane or due for delete, itāll find itself in the āTrash Canā.
Considering the process streamlined to delete a post, an OP can move his/her Trashpost to the Trashcan to save face.
