Ecommerce in Nigeria: why are cardholders choosing to pay cash on delivery? + more questions

Just reading through this thread, I wonder if we need an escrow of sorts. I remember a lot of people who were leery of using their credit cards on ecommerce sites back in the day found it easier to cozy up to the third party, PayPal, who said -

Go ahead to make the purchase and get charged online. We will insure you and protect your purchase up to ₦xxx, xxx, so that if you don’t get exactly what you need, we’ll mediate between you, the consumer, and the retailer, and refund your purchase.

It might initially hurt the retailer, but with a strong refund policy that the customer can reference, it will create confidence in people like my dad and my mum to actually pull out their ATM card and pay for a product or service online in Nigeria. This third party will need to invest heavily in branding, insurance and consumer awareness. They will also need to partner strategically with banks, who can in turn educate their clientele on how to be ‘safer’ with Nigerian retailers online using this escrow service that holds on to the funds till the consumer says, “I’ve gotten my goods or services, and they are exactly what was described.”

From personal experiences, i prefer cash on delivery, as i have the opportunity to see if the product is exactly what i ordered for. I had an experience where the fashion site here in Nigeria advertised a specific brand and upon arrival it was a different brand.

also, in most cases getting a refund is just impossible. an experience with Dealdey really taught me a lesson, it was a pre-order item where i had to pay before delivery. i paid by card, the item did not arrive in the specified time, Dealdey could not be bothered to inform me the item was not supplied. at the end of the day, i asked for a refund which was not possible and i was forced to accept the funds being paid into a wallet. at the end of the day i was just forced to buy an item i did not need just so i could use my money. What a drag

Funny you should mention that: “OLX launches escrow payments to prevent rip-off sales” http://bit.ly/1ixlG4x via @htxtafrica

It actually makes sense. Amazon 1-click makes it easier to check out. I hate having to whip out my card every time I want to pay online. GTbank has a service which connects straight to your bank account, I prefer using that on sites that have it, thank card payments.

Hi. I work for DealDey and I’d like to apologize for the experience. I’d like to point out something though, if you return the item within the return policy (3 days in Lagos, 7 days outside Lagos). Did you return item within this return policy? Was the item intact when you returned it?

However, seeing as you eventually weren’t satisfied, shoot me your correspondence with us via mail, tope@dealdey.com, I can work out some compensation for you. I apologize once again
