Those suggestions above, while not offering some real usefulness to users will be very beneficial to every spammer. Spammers want attention, your suggestions will create a very efficient attention seeking tool.

As a spammer if I know that when I create a post and comment 5 times, people get notified and they come and see the post, then I would go nuts with the post feature.

Or if I know that people gets notified when my post gets viewed more than 100 times, I would create a seemingly useful topic and fill the topic with junk advertisements.

With your suggestions, the things that are certain are:

  • Those notification events will be triggered by posts
  • Whichever post that triggers the event will have a high number of views

So, instead of tracking all those things you listed, you can just send interested users the list of topics that have high traffic within a specific hour. Basically topics that are trending. Kind of what you have here: Radar from TechCabal but with a shorter attention span.

Now, looking at it that way, you find out that what you are really suggesting is a subscription feature for those who are too busy to visit radar daily. Those who would care about radar being on fire most likely refresh frequently or are on radar constantly.

That sentence itā€™s like an horror movie! Thereā€™s enough 'deliberateā€™ bad behavior as it stands, so a feature that can encourage spammers is sadly not one to be encouragedā€¦unless of course implemented cleverly*.

*placeholder to think of something to rescue a naive idea

Between Radarā€™s built in anti-spam sandboxing features and Radarā€™s eagle eye moderation, the chances of this happening are almost zero.

I donā€™t really know the details of radarā€™s moderation feature but if his suggestion gets implemented then the chances of it happening will definitely tend towards 100 since radar will willfully let it happen.

I concur. The house rules are already in place to take care of spammers. The rules can still be further enhanced/reinforced

Another feature to go with the notification is ā€˜followā€™. (social platforms have this anyway)
You can set the notification to only notify you when the person you ā€˜followā€™ has posted a comment.
You can set the frequency of the notifications as previously described

WordPress has a REST api module you can include in your site. Full featured. I was kinda intimidated sef. Anyways @lordbanks should really give it a thought. I wanna play with techcaba! Api :disappointed:

If you really need granular access then you need the discourse API

However it all depends on the Cabals willingness to generate an API key for you. As a Cabal yourself, you should be able to influence this.
