Hello Omar.
I like the “start from the scratch” spirit.

But now it seems you are looking building a pretty serious venture hence the need to get a couple of people on-board. While there are many good reasons to fork the Android source and build stuff on it, there are many pitfalls along side too.

Some of which includes.

  • Licensing Restrictions will mean, you cant bundle your device with
GApps ( and Google Play). Hence you loose access to the almighty Google Play Service, by default. You will need your “educational” users, to start hacking these custom packages into the devices.
** You may actually bundle them, but you will be breaching the licence, exposing yourself to lawsuits*
  • You will spend most of your time writing security patches (you can get the updates from the main source), and thats alot of work.

The reality is forking the source and building stuff on top of it is a good step, if you are building a form of platform not if you are building apps, or a suite of apps.

Okay, i made a very big mistake posting on this site. Clearly you all dont have any idea hat am talking about and what i am planning. so plese if you are interested follow the instruction on the main post.
Thank you

Actually its a learning tablet…google app store will only cause distractions. its gonna be a strictly learning tablet.

When building an educational platform, you dont even want students or teachers to have access to google play. You want the machine to be rendered useless for purposes other than schooling. You save a gazillion other issues including battery life etc especially with focus on schools in remote areas.
can you imagine what you need to uproot from the base system to keep a device powered continously from 8am classes to 2pm close of classes with that machine handling every single aspect of the student’s life in a boarding school including classwork and hostel access authentication?
You even want to disable the external connectivity of the machine like usb functions for the usb/power connector.
And you want to lock a seamless group sharing service which cannot exist using existing resources.
The juice is in the thought process.

This is someone that knows what he is talking about…

Google Play Services != Google Play Store

It is a bunch of libraries written to contain many improvements to the Android platform that wont be part of the Vanilla Android. Its more difficult writing Android apps with Play Services these days.

Please can u list out the google play services

These are some of the packages in the library.

com.google.android.gms:play-services-base
com.google.android.gms:play-services-ads
com.google.android.gms:play-services-appindexing
com.google.android.gms:play-services-maps
com.google.android.gms:play-services-location
com.google.android.gms:play-services-fitness
com.google.android.gms:play-services-panorama
com.google.android.gms:play-services-drive
com.google.android.gms:play-services-games
com.google.android.gms:play-services-wallet
com.google.android.gms:play-services-identity
com.google.android.gms:play-services-cast
com.google.android.gms:play-services-plus
com.google.android.gms:play-services-appstate
com.google.android.gms:play-services-wearable
com.google.android.gms:play-services-all-wear

And in developing android apps, you will be finding yourself needing some of the features in these packages. Without playstore, you dont get this. Of course you may build them yourself, the you find yourself building a platform. But if building a platform is your goal, then thats a a sacrifice you will invest in.

*and i actually know what you are talking about, I have experience building/customizing Android from source.

My number is 08072867618

Somewhere along the lines of joy and angst I would have said a few things to all the replies.

But let me do this briefly.
@Omar you could easily have framed your request this way.

Guys we are looking to built a learning device (tablet) that allows us to fully control and customize all the features and functions of the hardware. We have chosen to go with Android Kit-Kat, but if you have ideas on how we could do this better please feel free to let us know.

Presently, we are at the idea stage and looking for innovative minds who have got some experience in handling something similar to this.
My ideal team would consist of 3 people (x for design, y for OS programming, and z for project management)…

We have already secured (or are in the process of securing) funding for this project which is backed by a real life demand in 3 (or more) institutions/schools in West Africa/ Africa, etc.

If you are interested in being a part of this project please contact me directly on …

Just what I would do if I were seriously looking for help, without the founder status hubris.

The other day I said we have a doctor in the house, someone disagreed. See how he’s administering medication to @Omar now.

Please @xolubi, @logbon72, @lordzouga, @akindolu and every other persons involved here, just wait a bit and you’ll notice that @doctorfox’s medications would work miracles.

I saw @waleoyediran tried being a good Samaritan. Sure, your reward is in heaven… Who knows, you could be the next Steve Jobs bringing in more ideas on how to conquer the world with @Omar’s idea.

Am I still here? Apologies, going out for the medication to continue.
